Abstract: Mfr. of optical items from synthetic material uses a sleeve contg. two moulded halves, at least the lower one of which is mobile. The mould halves are separated and a measured quantity of the thermoplastic is introduced under normal press. into the mould cavity through a feeder inlet. As the mould halves are brought into their final closed position, the lower mould half blocks the feeder inlet prior to the material coming under pressure. The mould cavity may be heated to at least the glass transition temp. of the polymer, before introduction of the material. Used esp. in mfg. concave lenses, i.e. those with the rim thicker than the middle, made from e.g. polycarbonate. Also non-optical lenses. Unlike injection moulding, the polymer does not preferentially fill the rim before the middle of the lens mould, thus avoiding a circular join in the lens. There is also no sprue of excess material to be polished away; the lens is ready for immediate use. The thickness of the lens is not limited.
