Abstract:
Quarternized derivatives of oligoquinoline, reacted with refractory metal oxysalts, to provide oligoquinolinium metal oxide salts having enhanced corrosion inhibition properties for iron-based alloy articles in sulfur containing media.
Abstract:
The present invention is predicated on the discovery that quinoline and substituted quinoline derivatives, having substituents in positions other than the 2 and 6 position, undergo polymerization in the presence of tetrahydroquinoline or substituted tetrahydroquinolines and a transition metal sulfide catalyst to produce polymers that have repeating quinoline and substituted moieties. Thus, in one embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a novel method of preparing polymers having the formula which comprises contacting a tetrahydroquinoline having the formula with a quinoline compound having the formula at elevated temperatures and in the presence of a transition metal sulfide catalyst wherein the metal is selected from Groups VIB, VIIB and VIIIB of the periodic table and mixtures thereof and wherein the Rs (i.e. R₃, R₄, etc.) and the R′s (i.e. R′₃, R′₄, etc.) may be the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, halogen (especially fluoro-, chloro- and bromo-), -NO₂, OH, -NH₂, -SH, -CN and organic substituents. In the above polymer, x and y represent the relative proportion of bracketed structural quinoline or substituted moieties, and n is an integer equal to or greater than 2.

Novel quaternary quinolinium compounds are disclosed, being useful as metal corrosion inhibitors. These compounds may be formed by reacting quinoline oligomers with alkylating agents such as benzyl halide, p- -xylenyl dihalide and alkyl sulfates. Examples of the compounds are represented by the formula: wherein n and m are integers, with n being greater than 2 and up to about 200 and m being equal to or greater than 1; R is H or an alkyl group having from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms; R¹ is an alkyl group having 1 to about 20 carbon atoms, X⁻ is a chloride, bromide or iodide and Z⁻ is an anion selected from BF₄⁻, SO₄ ̿, ClO₄⁻, PF₆⁻ and HSO₄⁻.
Abstract:
Sulfated fullerenes are disclosed. They are prepared by sufficiently reacting fullerenes with fuming sulfuric acid. The sulfated fullerenes, containing primarily open chain and cyclic sulfate substituent groups, may also contain sulfonic acid groups, sulfone groups, hydroxy groups and mixtures thereof.

Abstract:
One embodiment of the present invention is directed to polysubstituted fullerene moieties having a plurality of substituents thereon, selected from hydroxy, oxide, nitro, amino, organocarboxy, amide, and mixtures thereof. Another embodiment is directed toward the preparation of the novel polysubstituted fullerenes which method comprises contacting fullerenes with an electrophilic reagent such as nitronium ion or an organic peracid. When the electrophilic agent is nitronium ion, the fullerene is further contacted with a nucleophilic reagent. The polysubstituted fullerenes are particularly useful as cross-linking agents in polymers and/or as core building blocks of star polymers.
Abstract:
Novel polymers consisting essentially of recurring moieties selected from polyquinoxaline and substituted polyquinoxalines are disclosed. These polymers are prepared by contacting 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxaline or 1,2,3,4-organo substituted tetrahydroquinoxaline compounds with a transition metal sulfide catalyst at elevated temperatures. Also disclosed are quaternary ammonium derivatives of the novel polymers, their preparation and use.
