Abstract:
POLAR MATERIALS, SUCH AS HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT AROMATICS, ARE SEPARATED FROM PETROLEUM DISTILLATE FRACTIONS BY CONTACTING A PETROLEUM DISTILLATE FRACTION WITH A SELECTIVE EXTRACTION SOLVENT. THE SOLVENTS EMPLOYED, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS DISCLOSURE ARE HYDROXYL SUBSTITUTED ALIPHATIC KETONES SUCH AS 3-HYDROXY-3-METHYL-2-BUTANONE. THE RESULTS OBTAINED WITH THESE SOLVENTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OBTAINED WITH THE USE OF PHENOL.

FINELY DIVIDED SOODIUM IS PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE. THE PROCES IS BEST CARRIED OUT BY DISTILLING THE OIL FROM A MIXTURE OF THE OIL AND THE METAL. HYDROFINING EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER THE ALKALI METAL TREAT OR BOTH FURTHER IMPROVES THE OIL.

A hydrocarbon composition, for example a lubricating oil electrical insulation oil or fuel oil, contains one or more heteroaromatic nitrogen compounds having the following general formula:wherein each X is N, CH or C-alkyl with at least one X being N; Y is N, CH or C-alkyl; R is H or CH 2 NR 2 " where each R" is H or alkyl of 1 to 20 carbons; R' is H, SR'" OR'" or NR 2 '" with each R'" being H or alkyl of 1 to 20 carbons. Preferably both X groups are nitrogen atoms and Y is CH. Suitable compounds include purine, 6-aminopurine and 8-azaadenine. The compounds impart antioxidant and/or metal deactivating and/or electrical insulating properties.
