Abstract: 1,089,661. Reciprocating pumps. F.N.R.D. Ltd. April 8, 1964 [April 8, 1963], No. 13958/63. Heading F1A. Delivery and suction accumulators 9 and 16 are connected to the outlet 8 and inlet 19 of an hydraulically-actuated piston pump 1, 2 to provide continuity of supply and delivery. The accumulator pistons 10 and 17 are biased by the supply and exhaust pressure, respectively, of the actuating liquid, e.g. oil, and by springs 11 and 18. The supply and exhaust of actuating liquid to the pump 1, 2 is controlled electrically by piston operated contacts 3, 4 actuating valve 5. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), a pump (21) having a pair of linked pistons (22, 23) is connected to delivery and suction accumulators (42 and 42) having connected pistons (38 and 39) biased by a common spring (44). The linked pistons (22, 23) operate spool valves (27 and 28) controlling the supply and exhaust of actuating liquid and the inlets and outlets from the piston cylinders are connected in parallel. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), two pairs of diaphragms (101) are actuated through bodies of liquid by hydraulic motors (102) having pairs of linked pistons. The inlets and outlets of the diaphragm pumps are connected in parallel and suction and delivery accumulators are provided for each pair of pumps. The accumulators are biased by the supply and exhaust pressures of the motor actuating liquid and by adjustable pneumatic pressure. The actuating liquid for the motors (102) may be supplied in parallel or in series. With the motors operating in series liquid is exhausted from one motor and supplied to the second and the pressure drop from inlet to exhaust in the motors is the same for each motor. With this arrangement the inlet pressure for the first motor in series is substantially twice that for the second and the flow of actuating liquid is substantially half that required for parallel operation. The sides of accumulators operating on pumped medium are separated therefrom by means diaphragms acting through bodies of trapped liquid. To reduce hammer in the valves controlling the supply and exhaust of actuating liquid they may be operated slowly to give extended reversal periods.
