The covering power of a photographic gelatino silver halide emulsion is increased by incorporating 5-50% by weight, based on the weight of gelatine, of a water-soluble #-sulphoalkylated polysaccharide with a degree of substitution of 0À1-1À2. The polysaccharide may be derived from dextran, starch or cellulose, may have a molecular weight of 5000-100000 and may contain alkyl, oxyalkyl, polyoxyalkyl and carboxyalkyl groups attached by ether linkages. The sulphoalkyl groups may be additionally substituted by nitrile, hydroxyl, carboxylic acid and/or further sulphonic acid groups.

Photographic gelatine-silver halide emulsions contain a levane (i.e. a poly-D-fructofuranose), in addition to, or partially replacing the gelatine. The levane preferably has a molecular weight of 5, 000 to 200, 000, is preferably used in an amount of 5 to 50% by weight based on the gelatine, and may be applied at any stage, but preferably after chemical curing. The levane may also be added to auxiliary layers adjacent to the silver halide layer. In the example a high speed silver iodidebromide/gelatin emulsion was treated with an aqueous solution of a levane and developed with alkaline metal-hydroquinone.
