Abstract: A triple-electrode planar display capable of achieving further power saving has been disclosed. A drive unit is dedicated to a planar display having a display panel (1) in which cells (10) being arranged in the form of a matrix and having a memory function and discharge glow function are formed, in which one (14) of each pair of electrodes (14,15) on the same substrate (13) which are responsible for discharge glow is a common electrode connected in common. The drive unit includes a common electrode drive circuit for applying an alternating voltage to the common electrode (14), and a power save circuit (60) that when the common electrode is changed from a high potential to a low potential, restores and accumulates power applied to the common electrode, and that when the common electrode is changed from the high potential to the low potential, applies accumulated power to the common electrode. The power save circuit (60) includes a restoration channel that includes a capacitive element (C3) and inductance element (64) and that restores power, and an application channel (XLG) that includes an inductance element (65) and that applies accumulated power to the common electrode (14).

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operation feeling of luminance control in an operational range of an ABL function by changing a sustainment frequency at every characteristic line answering to the same display rate information. SOLUTION: A display rate detection means 2 detects the display rate information showing the number of lighting pixels of a plasma display panel 1 revising luminance by the sustainment frequency. A conversion table selection means 4 selects one of many characteristic lines in a prescribed conversion table according to a setting value of a luminance setting means 3. A sustainment frequency decision means 5 decides the sustainment frequency by referring to the selected characteristic line by a display rate. Then, all characteristic lines are provided with the decision characteristic of the linear sustainment frequency according to the display rate within the frequency range from a prescribed maximum sustainment frequency to a prescribed minimum sustainment frequency, and are provided with proper shapes so that the sustainment frequency at every characteristic line answering to the same display rate is changed.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide normal display by forming cut-off sections in a main discharge side bulkhead at equal intervals without being subjected to interference from other discharging cells, and thereby combining an address side bulkhead with the main discharge side bulkhead so as to be formed into a complete lattice shape. CONSTITUTION:A main discharge side bulkhead 4 is formed with cut-off sections 8 at equal intervals, each discharge cell is separated into a lattice shape by the step of inserting an address side bulkhead 3 into each of the aforesaid cut-off sections 8 so as to be combined therewith. In this case, the address side bulkhead 3 is made some what higher in height than the main discharge side bulkhead 4. This therefore makes it easy to fill discharge spaces with gas. This thereby permits discharge cells to be completely separated, and also permits voltage applied to an address electrode 6 to be controlled to be low, thereby preventing erroneous operations such as collar cross talk, erroneous discharge and the like so that display in high quality can be provided.
