    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a tracking method adopting a thinning method in which a large number of extracted picture elements can be taken, and in addition, the change of the number of the extracted picture elements is lessened by extracting the picture elements less than a specified number by rejecting one picture element for every plural picture elements in the range of the specified number of the picture elements in a stage to extract the picture elements. CONSTITUTION:When the number of the picture elements in the processing range is made N, and the number of the processible picture elements is made N0, four picture elements are extracted from every five picture elements 10 the range of 25/16 >=N/N0>1 and two picture elements are extracted from every three picture elements in the range of 9/4 >=N/N0>25/16. Then, a data processor 16 calculates the position of the center of gravity of the area of an image in a window as considering the extracted picture elements an object, and gives deviation from the central position of a picture to a visual line control device 22 as a tracking error. The visual line control device 22 controls a gimbal, etc., in accordance with the given tracking error, and moves the visual line of an image pickup device 10, and controls the image of the object so as to be positioned at the center of the picture.
