Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable the formation of an optical fiber to a truly circular cross section by constituting the double clad layers consisting of the 1st and the 2nd clad layers to be constituted between a core layer and the outermost layer in such a way that the m.p. thereof is lower on the outermost layer side and is increasingly higher the nearer the boundary with the core layer. CONSTITUTION:A thick clad layer 42 which has a refractive index approximately equal to silica glass and is added with the impurity for decreasing the m.p. so as to be added increasingly less from the outer layer side toward the center and a core layer 41 having the higher refractive index are provided on the inside of the outermost layer 42 consisting of silica glass. Since the clad layer is thickly formed with such constitution, the diffusion of the OH group contained in a quartz tube used as a starting material into the core layer is prohibited and since the amt. of the B2O3 added in the clad layer is decreased toward the boundary with the core layer, the loss caused by the absorption of the transmitted light leaking from the core layer by B2O3 is reduced, and the single mode optical fiber of a low transmission loss having a truly circular sectional shape is obtd.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To coat the outer circumference of an optical fiber with a reinforcing metallic layer, uniformly and continuously, by contacting a spun optical fiber with metallic vapor in a metallic vapor pipe.
CONSTITUTION: A ring-shaped metal-melting crucible 21 having a hollow part at the center is integrated with a vertical pipe 22 for passing metallic vapor, and is placed in the path of the spun optical fiber 3. The crucible 21 is charged with a metallic coating material having relatively high vapor pressure, and an inert gas is introduced through the gas-feeding pipe 23 into the crucible 21 to keep the atmosphere in the crucible 21 to non-oxidative state. The coating material 24 is molten and evaporated by the first furnace 24, and the metallic vapor is filled in the pipe 22 heated by the second furnace 25. The optical fiber 3 is inserted into the pipe 22, brought into contact with the metallic vapor to deposite metallic layer on the surface, and pulled down through the hollow part of the crucible 21 to obtain an optical fiber 3' having uniformly applied metalic layer.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To form a structure of a metal-coated optical fiber superior in characteristics of high temp. resistance and aging change resistance, by successively coating the outer circumference of the optical fiber with a low m.p. metallic layer and a high m.p. metallic layer. CONSTITUTION:The outer circumference of a spinned 125mum diameter quartz type optical fiber is continuously coated with molten zinc placed in a crucible to form an about 5mum thick layer 2 of lower m.p. Zn metal, and further coated with molten Al placed in a crucible heated at about 700 deg.C to form a 20mum thick layer 3 of higher m.p. Al metal. Since the coating speed of Al is about 20m/min, the surface of the Zn layer 2 somewhat melts but does not flow. Therefore, direct contact of Al with the fiber 1 is avoided. In this case, part of Zn and Al are converted into alloy, thus forming easily a light transmitting optical fiber having high temp. and aging change resistance characteristics sufficiently resistant to secondary treatment temps. at about 500 deg.C.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polarization-maintaining optical fiber by the conventional optical fiber manufacture technique, easily, by cladding an optical guide consisting of a circular core and a clad with the secondary clad composed of two kinds of glass materials having different optical indices from each other. CONSTITUTION:The exactly circulator thin optical rod 4 obtained by drawing a preformed light guide composed of the core part 2 and the clad part 3 to a desired diameter, is positioned at the center of a support tube 1 made of quartz glass which becomes the outer protection layer. The circumference of the light guide is packed completely with a plurality of thin optical rods 7, 8 in such a manner that the optical rods 7 and 8 have different refractive indices from each other, the rods 7 are placed to a pair of oppositely placed parts 5a and 5b each occupying a definite angle in the whole circumference and the rods 8 are placed to the other pair of the parts 6a and 6b occupying the remaining parts. The rods 4, 7 and 8 can be manufactured easily by forming the preforms e.g. by vapor- phase chemical deposition process, etc., and drawing the rods to the desired diameters under heating. The assembled structure is integrated by heating, and spun at a definite speed under melting while preventing the inclusion of bubbles to obtain a polarization-maintaining single mode optical fiber 21 easily.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled optical fiber haing unchangeable polarization characteritics easily and inexpensively, by using a commercially available high-purity quartz tube as a side rod for providing strain, using a high silicate glass having improved processability instead of a quartz tube for forming the second clad layer. CONSTITUTION:The high-purity quartz rods 24 having a refractive index equal to that of a clad part and a diameter larger than the parent material 21 is put on both sides of the solid rod parent material 21 consisting of a core part and the clad part having different refractive indexes. They are inserted into the thick high silicate glass tube 26 having higher coefficient of linear expansion than the quartz tube 24, heated and integrated to form the solid rod material 27. The rod material 27 is then inserted into a quartz tube, heated, integrated, drawn, to give optical fiber consisting of the light waveguide part 31 comprising the core 32 and the clad 33, the strain providing part 34 made of quartz glass, the second clad laye 35 having a higher heat shrinkage ratio than the quartz glass, and the outer covering layer 36. Consequently, the titled optical fiber having the desired polarization characteristics can be obtained with good processability inexpensively.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration in polarization characteristics owing to oscillation, bending and twisting by forming a secondary coating layer of a thermoplastic resin continuously by extrusion coating on the outside circumferential surface of a primarily coated single mode optical fiber which is beforehand formed while said fiber is kept applied with required twisting. CONSTITUTION:A single mode optical fiber strand 1 which is produced by coating the strand with a silicone resin is let off from a rotary spool 3 and is passed through the inside of a feed capstan 4, a wire twister 5 and a resin extrusion coater 6 and is then taken up on a take-up drum 7. The strand is passed through the inside of the twister 5 under adjustment of the revolution of the capstan 4 and the drum 7 to apply twisting continuously on the primarily coated fiber 1 which is then fed into the coater 6. The fiber which is formed with a secondary coating layer consisting of a thermoplastic resin such as nylon on the outside surface by extrusion coating is taken up on the drum 7. The single polarization optical fiber 2 having the stable twisted construction and the desired polarization characteristics is obtained by the above-mentioned method.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To efficiently deposit a uniform glass layer at a proper vitrifying temp. by installing a glass transparency measuring system interlocking with a heating means and a radiation pyrometer detecting the temp. of an outer wall at a vitrifying part so as to control the heating temp. CONSTITUTION:Gaseous starting material A is introduced into a transparent glass tube 1 from the arrow B direction. The tube 1 is locally heated with a heating means 2 mounted on a moving stand 3 moving in the longitudinal direction of the tube 1 to chemically react the gaseous material A in a vapor phase, and the reaction product deposited on the inner wall of the tube 1 is vitrified. Laser beams from a laser device 7 are passed through the tube 1 perpendicularly to the axis of the tube 1 through a reflecting mirror 4, and the beams are made incident to a photodetector 5 and subjected to photoelectric conversion. A signal corresponding to the detected output is fed to a flow rate controller 8. On the other hand, a slight change in the heating temp. of the tube 1 is measured with a radiation pyrometer 6, and a signal corresponding to the detected signal is fed to the controller 8 to control the flow rates of gases for the heating means 2 with mass flow meters 9, 10.
