    Abstract: This invention provides, inter alia, communication devices for contactless underwater data transmission and reception.     Abstract: An underwater communication device 100, or a method of underwater communication, comprises of means of providing an underwater communication arrangement 125/130 which is coupled to at least two antennae 115, 120 arranged to form an electric field radiating and/or receiving arrangement 110. The device 100 includes a water-tight housing 105 for a communication section 125/130 which is coupled to the radiating and/or receiving conductive antennae elements 115, 120 which are located outside the housing. The communication section may comprise at least one transmitter and/or receiver, a waveform generator 135, a digital to analog converter 140, a filter 145 and a power driver 150 to provide modulated signals using various digital modulation techniques. The communication device 100 can provide contactless data communication between such devices at distances of less than 0.5 m or 1 m, at frequencies of 1 kHz to 100 MHz, with signal levels of 10 nano-volts per metre to 100 volts per metre and where the water has a conductivity of 3 to 7 Siemens per metre, which can possibly provide a data transmission rate of at least 100 kBps.
