The coal-fired power plant (10) includes a coal combustion zone (22) configured to generate a flue gas (50) flow that includes at least carbon-containing fly ash and mercury, a duct coupled to the combustion zone for channeling the flue gas flow therethrough, a particulate control device (60) coupled to the duct, the particulate control device is configured to collect mercury from the flue gas flow, and a vane assembly coupled within the duct, the vane assembly extends at least partially through the flue gas flow.

Abstract: Method and a system for capturing mercury in a flue gas are provided. The method includes partially oxidizing a carbonaceous solid fuel in a gasifier such that a thermally activated carbon-containing solid sorbent and gaseous gasification products are generated wherein the gasifier is proximate to a combustion system for combusting a mercury containing fuel. The method further includes storing the generated thermally activated carbon-containing solid sorbent proximate to the combustion system and combusting a mercury containing fuel in a combustion zone of the combustion system wherein mercury released during combustion is entrained in flue gas generated by the combustion. The method also includes injecting the thermally activated solid sorbent in the flue gas downstream of the combustion zone and absorbing at least a portion of the entrained mercury on the thermally activated solid sorbent.

Abstract: A system and method is provided for controlling combustion emission parameters associated with a gas turbine combustor 104. The system comprises one or more photodetectors 122 in communication with an optical path through a gas turbine exhaust duct 110, one or more light sources 114 operable to propagate light 118 along the optical path to the one or more photodetectors; and a control device 124. The control device controls at least one of the combustion emission parameters based on at least in part on one or more signals from the one or more photodetectors. The optical path comprises at least one input optical port 116 and at least one output optical port 120. The combustion parameters may comprise at least one of; fuel flow rate, fuel flow distribution, airflow rate, water injection rate, combustor balancing, or air /fuel ratio. The one or more light sources comprise one of a quantum cascade laser, a vertical cavity laser, an interband cascade laser, or a tuneable diode laser.

The method also includes injecting the thermally activated solid sorbent in the flue gas downstream of the combustion zone 112 and absorbing at least a portion of the entrained mercury on the thermally activated solid sorbent.

Abstract: A method and a device for reducing the emission of Mercury from a fuel combusting device. The method includes injecting the mercury containing fuel to the combusting zone and injecting a mercury oxidizer to the fuel upstream of the combustion device. The combustion device assembly includes a combustion device including a combustion zone (20), the combustion device configured to facilitate an oxidation reaction of mercury, and at least one of a first injection port (23) positioned in the combustion zone, a second injection port (25) positioned downstream of the combustion zone, and a third injection port (16) positioned upstream of the combustion zone, wherein at least one of the injection ports is configured to inject a mixture of mercury oxidizer including MgCl2 and air. Mercury is oxidized and may then be captured in pollution control equipment installed in the gas outlet duct.

The gasified gas products may be injected into the combustion of coal. The solid fuel may be coal, biomass, sewage sludge or carbon-containing waste product.

Abstract: A pollutant removal system for use with a power generation system includes a particulate control device configured to remove particulates from a flue gas stream produced within the power generation system. The particulate control device is cleaned on a predetermined cleaning cycle. The pollutant removal system also includes a sorbent control system for controllably injecting a sorbent into the flue gas stream upstream of the particulate control device. The sorbent control system is configured to adjust a sorbent injection rate as a function of the cleaning cycle.
