Abstract: A system includes an electrical generator 12 comprising a stator, a rotor, and a gas coolant path 18 through an interior of the generator and at least one fibre optic gas purity sensor 34 configured to sense a gas purity of a flow of a gas coolant 52 through the gas coolant path. The coolant may be hydrogen and a purity controller 43 is used to control the amount of coolant flowing into the generator. The purity sensor comprises a fibre core, modulated grating structure, fibre cladding and a multilayered sensing film over the cladding to sense one or more particular gases in the coolant flow.
