Abstract: SOLVENT RESISTANT, COMPATIBLE BLENDS OF POLYPHENYLENE ETHERS AND LINEAR POLYESTERS Impact- and solvent-resistant resin blends are prepared from a polyphenylene ether, or blend thereof with a polystyrene, a linear polyester such as a poly(alkylene dicarboxylate), at least one elastomeric polyphenylene ether-compatible impact modifier and at least one polymer containing a substantial proportion of aromatic polycarbonate units as a compatibilizing agent. There may also be present a minor amount of at least one epoxide and/or masked isocyanate such as triglycidyl isocyanurate or a glycidyl methacrylate polymer. The polyphenylene ether is preferably inactivated by reaction with at least one non-volatile carboxylic acid or anhydride and/or by extrusion with vacuum venting.

Abstract: This invention relates to impact-modified thermoplastic compositions comprising a compatible resin composition comprising either a polyphenylene ether alone or in combination with a polystyrene resin. The composition further includes at least one poly(alkylene dicarboxylate) resin, at least one polymer containing aromatic polycarbonate units, alone, or in combination with a styrene homopolymer, and an impact modifier comprising a glycidyl (meth)acrylate grafted EPDM alone or in combination with other impact modifiers. These compositions exhibit high impact resistance, solvent resistance, tensile strength, thermal stability and sheer sensitive viscosity which make them uniquely suitable for extrusion and blow molding applications.

Abstract: (8CN-8329) In acordance with the invention, there are provided thermoplastic compositions comprising an admixture of: (a) polyphenylene ether resin; (b) polyester resin; and (c) a compatibilizer for (a) and (b) comprised of polycarbonate-polyester copolymer in an amount sufficient to compatiblize components (a) and (b). In preferred embodiments, the polycarbonate-poly-ester copolymer is present in an amount of at least 2%, preferably at least about 5% and more prefably from about 5% to about 25% by weight based on 100% by weight of (a) and (b). In addition, preferably, the polycarbonate component of said polycarbonate-polyester copolymer is present in an amount of at least 1%, preferably at least about 3%, and more preferably from about 3% to about 20% by weight based on 100% by weight of (a) and (b).

Abstract: IMPACT MODIFICATION OF POLYPHENYLENE ETHER-POLYAMIDE COMPOSITIONS Resinous compositions having excellent impact resistance are obtained by initially blending at least one polyphenylene ether or a blend thereof with at least one polystyrene, a functionalizing compound such as maleic anhydride or fumaric acid and an unfunctionalized elastomeric olefin copolymer such as an EPDM, and subsequently blending the resulting product with at least one polyamide. These resin compositions are suitable for molding into plastic parts having a good impact resistance characteristic.

Representative epoxytriazine-capped polyphenylene ethers may be prepared by reaction of a polyphenylene ether with an epoxychlorotriazine such as diglycidyl chlorocyanurate, n-butyl glycidyl cholorcyanurate or mesityl gltcidyl chlorocyanurate. Representative copolyesters are those characterized by recurring intralinear long chain ester units of formula: (I) wherein G represents a divalent organic moiety remaining after removal of terminal hydroxy groups from a poly (alkylene ether) glycol; and R represents a divalent organic moiety remaining after removal of carboxyl groups from a dicarboxylic acid having a molecular weight of less than 300; interrupted by short chain ester chain units of the formula: (II) wherein R has the meaning previously ascribed to it and D represents a divalent organic moiety remaining after removal of terminal hydroxyl group from a diol having a molecular weight of less than 250.
