Abstract: A vehicle body includes a door movable between open and closed positions and mounting a door lock engageable with a striker on the body for holding the door in closed position. The lock is of the uncoupling type and includes inside and outside release handles connected to an operating lever which is selectively coupled to and uncoupled from the detent for the lock bolt. A restraint belt includes lap and shoulder belts which are moved between restrained and unrestrained positions with respect to an occupant seating position upon extension and retraction of an outboard belt relative to a belt retractor mounted on the door. The retractor includes a belt anchoring reel having ratchet end plates and a pawl which is normally spring biased into engagement with the end plates to block movement of the reel in a belt extending direction. A first release lever is mounted on the retractor and resiliently biased into engagement with a fixed stop to locate the lever in unactuated position. When the first lever is moved to actuated position, it engages a pawl extension to move the pawl into released position. A manually operable handle on the retractor is movable independently of the first release lever into engagement with the pawl extension to also move the pawl to released position. A blocking lever is mounted on the lock and is resiliently biased to blocking position. The blocking lever is moved to unblocking position by engagement with the striker when the bolt moves to latched position in engagement therewith. A second release lever is mounted on the lock for movement transversely of the path of movement of the blocking lever. A rod connects the first and second levers for simultaneous movement to thereby normally locate the second lever in unactuated position wherein it is engageable by the lock operating lever. When either release handle is operated and the lock operating lever is uncoupled from the detent, the lock operating lever moves the second release lever to actuated position transverse of the path of the blocking lever and likewise moves the first lever to actuated position to release the pawl. When the release handle is released, the first and second levers return to unactuated position. When the lock operating lever is coupled to the detent, movement thereof by a release lever releases the pawl and also releases the lock bolt from the striker. The initial opening movement of the door permits the blocking lever to move to blocking position in the path of the second release lever and block return movement thereof and of the first lever to unactuated position when the release handle is released. The pawl thus remains released while the door is open.

Abstract: LOCKING JUNCTION RING FOR CONTINUOUS-LOOP PASSIVE SEAT BELT SYSTEM A load locking junction device is provided to couple a continuous-loop belt (20) having ends mounted on the vehicle door with an anchor belt (32) retractably mounted at the inboard side of the occupant seating position. The junction ring (34) includes a stamped metal frame (40) having a central elongated aperture defining spaced apart first and second elongated load bearing walls (46), (48). The continuous-loop belt (20) is slidable over the first wall (46) to divide the continuous-loop belt into a lap belt portion (38) and a shoulder belt portion (36). The anchor belt (32) extends through the aperture and has a pin (50) engaged in the end thereof to enlarge the anchor belt end portion for simultaneous engagement against the second wall (48) the continuous-loop belt so that the belts are coupled together and maintained in engagement with the load bearing walls against migration towards the ends of the elongated aperture. A spring (56) acts between the frame and the pin to normally hold the anchor belt (32) in spaced relation from the continuous-loop belt (20) and thereby permit free adjusting movement of the continuous-loop belt through the junction ring. The imposition of oppositely directed occupant restraining loads on the continuous-loop belt and the anchor belt during emergency induced vehicle deceleration causes the enlarged anchor belt end portion to forcefully clamp the continuous-loop belt against the first load bearing wall (46) whereby the restraining lengths of the lap belt and shoulder belt portions are fixed relative one another. A disconnect buckle (29) provided at one end of the continuous-loop belt may be disconnected to terminate the occupant restraining load so that the clamping effort is terminated and the continuous-loop belt may pass freely through the juncture ring to permit opening movement of the door and occupant egress.

Abstract: C-2918 D-2,217 WINDING PREVENTION BELT RETRACTOR FOR PASSIVE SHOULDER BELT SYSTEM An inertia locking seat belt: retractor for winding a shoulder belt having one end mounted on the vehicle door to move the belt between stowed and restraining positions upon movement of the door. The retractor has a winding prevention mechanism including a pawl and ratchet for selectively blocking belt winding rotation of the belt reel to hold the belt extended at a set length to establish a slackened comfort condition relative the occupant. A manually actuatable control means has a normal condition blocking control of the pawl by a control disc frictionally clutched to the reel and is manually actuatable to release the pawl for control by the disc. The control disc actuates the pawl to provide the set length, defines a range of unwinding wherein the pawl is temporarily deactuated to permit subsequent rewinding to return the belt to the set length, and disengages the pawl upon still further unwinding rotation so that the pawl is deactuated upon belt unwinding during opening of the door. The manually actuatable control means may be operated to temporarily deactuate the pawl to allow belt unwinding. The pawl blocks return of the manual control means to the normal pawl blocking condition until belt unwinding causes the control disc to deactuate the pawl.

Abstract: POWER SLIDING DOOR CLOSURE A sliding door in a van is mounted on tracks for sliding movement between open and closed positions. At the closed position a weather strip is compressed and a door latch is latched. A cable is attached to the door and routed through the vehicle body via pulleys so that pulling the first cable end opens the door and pulling the second cable end closes the door. A motorized drive mechanism includes first and second reels mounted concentrically and having the cable ends wrapped respectively about the reels in opposite directions. A motor drives in one direction rotating the first reel to open the door and is reversible to rotate the second reel to close the door. Each of the reels has a large diameter portion for winding the cable to provide relatively high speed and low force door movement over the greatest portion of travel and a small diameter portion for winding the cable to provide relatively low speed and high force movement of the door during the lesser portion of travel of the door closest to the closed position. The reels have cable seat grooves to receive the cable and a spiral ramp groove to connect the large and small diameter portions. A tension retaining spring acts between the two reels to always maintain the cable under tension.

Abstract: INERTIA RELEASE FOR BELT RETRACTOR WINDING PREVENTION MECHANISM In a seat belt retractor winding prevention mechanism, the winding prevention pawl is mounted upon a collapsible support mechanism which is collapsed by the onset of a sensed vehicle deceleration condition so that force imposed on the pawl by the windup spring shifts the pawl against a cam which moves the pawl axially out of engagement with the ratchet teeth carried by the reel to thereby release the winding prevention mechanism so that the windup spring will rewind the belt to a taut condition about the occupant.

Abstract: A closure latch for releasably securing a vehicle closure in a closed position and adapted for operation by a remote actuator operatively connected to the latch, the latch including a lock bolt rotatable between latched and unlatched positions corresponding to the open and closed positions of the closure, a detent lever operatively connected to the remote actuator and rotatable thereby between a retracted position engaging a detent shoulder on the bolt and an extended position releasing the shoulder, a cam on the bolt, and a follower on the detent lever. After the detent lever is actuated to release the bolt, movement of the latter toward the unlatched position thereof initiates engagement between the cam and the follower which thereafter cooperate to positively restore the detent lever and connected remote actuator to their original positions in response to further movement of the bolt toward the unlatched position.

Abstract: G-1,772 C-4010 CLOSURE LATCH An actuating means for a vehicle body closure latch includes a driver or passenger controlled electric motor driving a reciprocable rack through a gear train. The rack is resiliently biased to a neutral position and shifts an actuator from neutral to an operating position when the rack is moved from the neutral position to a driving position. The actuator is engageable with a latch operator to control movement of the latch bolt to unlatched position when the actuator moves to an operating position. When the actuator reaches the operating position, the actuator is positively stopped to stall the motor or power operator. When the power is removed from the stalled motor or power operator by the driver or passenger releasing a switch, the bias of the resilient centering means returns the rack to its initial neutral or starting position and back drives the motor through the gear train.

Abstract: BELT RETRACTOR WITH WINDING PREVENTION MECHANISM A belt retractor for a vehicle occupant restraint system has a winding prevention mechanism which is interlocked to the vehicle door so as to cancel the winding prevention mechanism upon opening movement of the door. The retractor has a reel with a ratchet plate having ratchet teeth thereon. A control disc is frictionally clutched to the reel and is engageable with a spring biased pawl mounted on the housing to control movement of the pawl between a detenting position engaging the ratchet teeth to prevent reel rotation in the winding direction and an undetenting position disengaging the pawl from the ratchet teeth. A blocking disc is also frictionally clutched for rotation with the reel and is effective to capture and hold the pawl in undetenting position. Actuation and cancellation of this winding prevention mechanism is in response to a predetermined sequence of belt winding and unwinding movement. A plunger mounted on the vehicle body is engageable by the door for movement between a retracted position when the door is closed and an extended position when the door is open. A lever connects the pawl and the plunger to move the pawl from the detenting to the undetenting positions to thereby assure belt winding reel rotation by the winding spring whenever the vehicle door is moved to the open position.
