Abstract: Elastic sheet for use as covering fabric consists of a plurality of interesting amorphorus threads produced from a molton mass of a synthetic polymer, the threads having a diameter of 0.1-1.5mm, and being placed in layers, and bonded together at the points of intersection. Specifically the sheet has a uniform structure and density, and all the surfaces are formed by projecting loops. The loops are disposed horizontally, or nearly horizontally on the lower face of the sheet to form a solid structure, while the density of the loop layers diminishes towards the upper face, the loops on the upper force of the sheet, may also be horizontal or nearly horizontal. The elastic sheet is produced by (a) extruding a molton mass of polyamide through orifices disposed at similar distances from each other, to form at least three staggered rows of the ends in the form of a hank, onto a coaling liquid, pref. water, the distance between the spinning die and the upper surface of the bath being 2-30cm. pref. 4-20cm. and (b) continuously withdrawing the formed sheet through the bath.

Molten polymer is mixed prior to melt spinning by passing the polymer through one or more mixing elements 8, contained in parallel bores 7 situated immediately above the spinneret plate 4 which supports the filter assembly 10, the component stream of polymer in each of the mixing elements being repeatedly divided several times into two to eight filamentary flows which are recombined after each division. Each mixing element may have from 2 to 10 flow dividing devices 12 and the mixing elements communicate at their upper end with a distributing chamber 3 situated beneath the filter assembly and with a storage chamber 9 at their lower end situated just before the spinneret, the storage chamber being of very small volume so that the mixing occurs immediately prior to the spinning in such a manner that the component streams do not merge before spinning. When spinning monofilar and multifilar textile threads or filaments with a low count one mixing device may be used which is advantageously fitted into the supporting plate transversely to the direction of flow of the melt. The same arrangement is possible if 2 or 3 mixing elements are used.

Abstract: This invention relates to a resilient filamentary cushioning unit or pad and a process for its production wherein a plurality of substantially amorphous thermoplastic filaments, e.g., fiber-forming polyamide filaments, are melt-spun into a liquid cooling bath in such a manner that they lie in the form of predominately helical to sinuous loops randomly bonded at their points of intersection as the filaments are completely solidified in the bath. The resulting looped and bonded filaments form a cohesive resilient structure which is useful as a spring core or cushioning unit.
