Abstract: An optical component 10 is constructed in such structure that a plurality of optical fibers are arranged in parallel to each other and the component has an entrance surface 10a obliquely cut relative to the optical axis and an exit surface 10b normally cut relative to the optical axis. The cross section of the optical component 10 is shaped so that optical fiber pairs, each pair being such a combination of two optical fibers with cores 14 of semicircular cross section as to form a substantially circular cross section, are arranged regularly. Orientation of two semicircular cores 14 forming the optical fiber pair is random in each optical fiber pair. Cladding 16 of each optical fiber is provided so as to be integrated by a heating and pressing process to fill a clearance between cores 14 of two optical fibers forming the optical fiber pair of interest and clearances between adjacent optical fiber pairs.

Abstract: As shown in Fig. 1, an optical device 10 comprises an input optical member 11, in which a plurality of optical fibers 14 are arranged parallel to each other and integrally formed, having an entrance surface 11a and an exit surface 11b which intersect an optical axis at respective angles of 90 DEG and 20 DEG ; and an output optical member 12, in which a plurality of optical fibers are arranged parallel to each other and integrally formed, having an entrance surface 12a intersecting an optical axis at an angle of 55 DEG and an exit surface 12b parallel to the entrance surface 12a. Here, the exit surface 11b of the input optical member 11 and the entrance surface 12a of the output optical member 12 are in contact with each other, whereas the angle formed between the optical axis of the input optical member 11 and the optical axis of the output optical member 12 is an angle of 35 DEG which is the difference between 55 DEG and 20 DEG mentioned above.

Here, while the exit surface 11b of the input optical member 11 is ground to yield an optically specular surface, the whole entrance surface 12a of the output optical member 12 is roughly ground to yield a rough surface having a center-line average roughness of 0.49 mu m.

Abstract: A fiber optics device of this invention includes first (2) and second (3) optical members. The first optical member (2) is obtained by integrating a plurality of optical fibers (21) of the first type by bundling, and has first (23) and second (22) end faces formed obliquely to the optical axis of the optical fibers of the first type and parallel to each other. The second optical member (3) is obtained by integrating a plurality of optical fibers (31) of the second type by bundling, and has first (32) and second (33) end faces formed obliquely to the optical axis of the optical fibers of the second type and parallel to each other. The optical fibers of the second (3) type have a larger numerical aperture than that of the optical fibers of the first type. The first end (32) face of the second (3) optical member is bonded (23) to the second end (22) face of the first (2) optical member.

Abstract: A fingerprint input apparatus includes a light source 2 for emitting light and a fiber optic plate 3 having a finger contact surface with which a finger 1 is brought into contact in order to pick up a fingerprint image of the finger 1. The light from the light source 2 is at first introduced into an inside of the finger 1, is scattered within the inside of the finger 1, and comes out of the finger through the surface of the finger 1 as outgoing ligh t. By the use of the outgoing light, the fingerprint image is formed. The ligh t source 2 is disposed so that the light from the light source 2 enters into a substantial center of a part of the finger 1 including a first joint on a pa lm side and that the light source 2 is contacted with the finger 1.
