    Abstract: A burned refractory shape is prepared by shaping and burning at above 3000 DEG F. a batch comprising magnesia and chrome ore in a weight ratio of 80 : 20 to 60 : 40, from 50-100% of the chrome ore being -28 Tyler mesh of which fraction 50-100% is +65 mesh, there being more -65 mesh magnesia than -65 mesh chrome ore and no more than 2% silica.

    Abstract: Refractory shapes having a porosity of less than 16% are produced by firing a mix comprising dead burned magnesite and finely divided zircon, the mix containing 60-90% MgO, 40-10% ZrO2.SiO2 and not more than 2% CaO, there being not more than 5% CaO + Fe2O3 + Al2O3 in the magnesite, the zircon passes a 65 Tyler mesh screen and the magnesite is of such a size range that at least two moles of MgO per mole of ZrO2.SiO2 plus sufficient additional MgO to stabilize the ZrO2 passes a 65 mesh screen. The magnesite has a density of at least 3.00 g./c.c. Firing at 2820 DEG F. for 10 hours is described. Specification 926,148 is referred to.
