Abstract:
1,165,231. Stabilized polyolefines. HERCULES Inc. 2 Jan., 1967 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 98/67. Heading C3P. A polyolefine composition contains 0À02- 10% by wt. of poly(cyclohexylenedisulphide) and 0À02-10% of a hindered phenol. The polyolefine may be stereoregular polypropylene. The sulphide may be of formula where R is H or a C 1-18 alkyl and n is 5-100, e.g. poly-(dipentene-disulphide). The phenol may be a bis(alkylhydroxyphenyl)-alkanoic acid ester, a poly-(alkylhydroxyphenyl) alkane, a poly-(alkylhydroyphenoxy)-substituted triazine of formula where R is an alkylhydroxyphenyl group and R 1 is -OR or thioalkyl group, an alkylphenol/ acetylene condensate containing the repeating unit where R is H or a C 1-20 alkyl group, a thiobis- (alkylphenol) or a polymeric terpene-phenol condensate. In the examples, polypropylene was blended with (1) calcium stearate, 2,4,6-tris- (3,5 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenoxy)- 1,3,5-triazine and a poly-(dipentenedisulphide): (2-8) as (1) replacing the triazine by 2,4-bis- (3,5 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenoxy)-6- thiooctyl - 1,3,5 - triazine; 1,3,5 - trimethyl- 2,4,6 - tris - (3,5 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) benzene; 2,2,4,4 - tetramethyl - 1,3- cyclobutyl - di[bis - (3,5 - di - tert. - butyl - 4- hydroxyphenyl)]-acetate; the polymeric condensate of p-tert. - butyl - phenol and acetylene; the reaction product of n-nonylphenol and acetone; and the condensate of p-tert.-octylphenol, formaldehyde and oxalic acid respectively.
Abstract:
READILY FLAMMABLE POLYMERS ARE RENDERED FLAME RETARDANT BY THE ADDITION OF 8 TO 20% OF A BROMINE-CONTAINING POLYETHER WHICH IS A POLYMER OF A BROMO-SUBSTITUTED OXETANE OR 3 TO 20% OF THE BROMINE-CONTAINING POLYETHER AND 1 TO 15% OF AN ANTIMONY COMPOUND. WHEN ANTIMONY IS PRESENT THE COMBINED AMOUNT OF BROMINECONTAINING POLYETHER AND ANTIMONY COMPOUND IS AT LEAST 5% BY WEIGHT OF THE TOTAL COMPOSITION.
Abstract:
HIGHLY COLORED NICKEL SALTS OR CHELATES OF IMINOHETEROCYCLCIC CARBOXAMIDES OR CARBOTHIAMIDES SUITABLE AS PIGMENTS ARE DESCRIBED. THE NICKEL SALTS ARE PREPARED BY REACTING A NICKEL SALT OF A WEAK ACID WITH THE DESIRED IMINOHETEROCYLIC CARBOXAMIDE OR CARBOTHIAMIDE, AS FOR EXAMPLE, WITH 2-IMINOCOUMARIN-3 CARBOXAMIDE, WHICH IN TURN CAN BE PREFORMED OR FORMED IN SITU BY CONDENSING THE APPROPRIATE ALDEHYDE WITH A CYANOACETAMIDE OR CYANOTHIOACAETAMIDE. PIGMENTARY MIXED CHELATES ARE ALSO FORMED IN THE SAME MANNER BY REACTING THE NICKEL SALT WITH A MIXTURE OF THE DESIRED IMINOHETEROCYCLIC CARBOXAMIDE OR CARBOTHIAMIDE AND AT LEAST ONE OTHER CHELATING AGENT SUCH AS, FOR EXAMPLE, DIMETHYLGLYOXIME, 1-NITROSO-2-NAPHTHOL, ETC.

Abstract:
An improved amine-containing antioxidant compound for stabilizing the polymeric products of ring-opening metathesis-catalyst-polymerization of the norbornene-type monomer reactions described above, and that effectively delays degradation by olefin oxidation of physical properties as well as avoiding discoloration of such polymeric products and discoloration of surface coatings applied for aesthetic purposes, and its use as a comonomer in a ring-opening metathesis-catalyst-polymerization of a norbornene-type monomer that undergoes ring-opening polymerization in the presence of a metathesis catalyst are disclosed.

0928p PATENT MATLACK CASE 37 SURFACE MODIFICATION OF POLYCYCLIC CYCLOOLEFIN POLYMERS Disclosed is a method for treating the surface of a strained ring cycloolefin polymer article, in particular an article molded from poly(dicyclopentadiene) or a copolymer of dicyclopentadiene and another strained ring cycloolefin, comprising halogenating the surface of the the article with a halogen, a pseudohalogen compound, or an interhalogen compound to improve the properties of the article, by increasing chemical resistance, improving retention of properties upon aging, reducing emission of residual monomer, and encouraging better adhesion of paint.
