Abstract: The surface of a metal workpiece, to which a capacitor discharge stud welding gun is to weld a stud, is precleaned by discharging the gun while it holds a tungsten or other high-melting-point electrode against the workpiece. This passes a stud-welding current pulse through the electrode and the workpiece. It causes a short explosive heating effect that tears up the surface of the workpiece and rips away the thus loosened contamination. It produces a clean metal surface whose extent corresponds to the diameter of the electrode. The magnitude and duration of the pulse are such as to have welded a stud with a lower melting point to the metal. The tungsten electrode may be replaced with titanium, niobium, zirconium, molybdenum etc. These have lower melting points and produce slight surface diffusion of these materials into the metal to form desirable alloys.

Abstract: In the apparatus disclosed, a power contact interrupting the connection between a capacitor discharge device and one of two lines of different polarities that respectively carry current from the device to a stud member and a base member to be welded together, is closed regardless of which polarity of line is connected to which member, by energizing a relay with an alternating current source coupled to each line with a diode and connected to the base member through an operator-actuated trigger. The trigger forms part of the gun that holds the stud member relative to the base member for welding. When the operator actuates the trigger, the AC source attempts to pass one-half cycle of current to one line through one diode and then the other half to the other line through the other diode. The half-cycle passing through the line connected to the base member actuates the relay which closes the contacts. The device can then supply energy to the weld point between the members.

Abstract: In a bolt welding gun for condenser discharge bolt welding, a bolt holder is axially displaceable within the gun housing and is secured in position ready to weld a bolt by a magnet device located in the housing. The magnet device consists of two parts and one is mounted on the bolt holder and is axially displaceable relative to it. A compression spring drives the bolt holder toward the receiving material when the magnet device is deactivated. When the movement of the bolt holder toward the receiving material is stopped, the magnet part mounted on it continues to move in the direction of the bolt. A spring is provided on the bolt holder and contacts the magnet part mounted on it so that, as the magnet part moves relative to the bolt holder, the spring provides a damping effect on the magnet part.

Abstract: A contact clamp for use in electrical welding is formed of a pair of arms arranged to be clamped to a workpiece. At least one of the arms has a pointed projection or cutting edge formed on its surface which contacts the workpiece for cutting through poorly conductive or non-conductive layers and assuring a satisfactory electrical contact between the clamp and the workpiece. A separate tightening screw can be used, extending through the end surface of one of the arms into contact with the workpiece. The pointed projection or cutting edge can be formed on the end of the tightening screw which contacts the workpiece.

Abstract: In the apparatus disclosed a welder produces welds by discharging a capacitor bank through a stud to be welded. Sensing means reactively coupled to the circuit produces signals corresponding to the changes in an electrical condition at the capacitor bank. Threshold means responsive to the sensing means produce an indication when the signal traverses a predetermined magnitude lower than that corresponding to a welding discharge of the capacitor but higher than signals expected from other changes to be expected in the electrical condition. A counter counts the number of indications. Preferably suitable diodes with sensing means suppress signals due to changes in charging currents in the capacitor bank.

Abstract: In the apparatus disclosed, welding is accomplished by discharging a bank of capacitors through a pair of electrodes. A transformer energizes a rectifier bridge that charges the capacitor bank through a switching arrangement. The primary winding of the transformer is loosely coupled to the secondary winding, at least at higher loads on the secondary side. This eliminates the high current surge at the beginning of each charging cycle and minimizes the required current-carrying capabilities of the rectifier bridge and switching arrangement.
