    Abstract: This invention is a process and apparatus for culturing animal cells, wherein in culturing animal cells in a mechanically stirred culture tank, a culture medium is agitated while suppressing surface turbulence and vortex formation, and an oxygen containing gas was jetted continuously toward the liquid surface through one or more blow nozzles to form dimples of inverted cone shape in the liquid surface. Therefore, according to this invention, the gas-liquid interface area is increased by virtue of the above-mentioned dimples, and the jetted gas forcedly form a flow from the bottom of dimple to the liquid surface, along the inside the liquid surface in the dimple of inverted cone shape, resulting in an increase of the renewal rate of the gas-liquid interface. By virtue of these effects mass transfer of gas between the gas phase in the head space of the culture tank and the liquid surface of a culture medium can be promoted while suppressing foaming of the culture medium.

    Abstract: The device comprises top (1) and bottom (2) substrates, transparent electrodes (3, 4) arranged on the inner surfaces of the substrates, protective films (11, 12) covering the electrodes, grid patterns (gratings), for orienting the molecules of the liquid crystal, which are formed on the protective films and liquid crystal interposed between the protective films, each of the grid patterns (gratings) comprises a sawtooth-shaped layer (13, 14) for orienting the liquid crystal, having a set of several discrete little islands made from an inorganic substance and arranged in a predetermined direction. Each little island has a surface which is inclined with respect to the surface of the substrates at a predetermined angle, the directions of the top and bottom little islands intersecting at an angle of approximately 90 DEG . Thus, the initial orientations of the liquid-crystal molecules (10) can be controlled so that the principal axes of the molecules are inclined at an angle lying between 5 and 30 DEG relative to the protective films (11, 12).
