    Abstract: The apparatus includes elements, e.g. GTO's (UGTO, VGTO, WGTO) connected to the positive arms respectively of a full-wave controlled-rectifier bridge circuit rectifying the output of an AC power source (Ea). The current flowing through a load (L) is circulated through a circulating loop when any one of the switching elements is turned off. A plurality of series circuits each including a capacitor (Cf) and a reactor (LF) connected in series is connected across the power supply lines of the AC power source, so that an overvoltage induced in the power source part when any one of the switching elements is turned off can be absorbed by the associated capacitor, and a discharge current discharged with a sharp rise from the capacitor to flow through the circulating loop when the switching element is then turned on is suppressed by the associated reactor. In other embodiments the apparatus chops rectified AC, Fig. 11, or inverts rectified AC, Fig. 12. In each of these latter embodiments, a single series circuit of a capacitor and a reactor is connected across the input power supply lines to the chopper switching element and inverter switching elements. The apparatus may be used in a rail vehicle, Fig. 13, or an elevator, Fig. 14.
