Abstract: A process for bleaching raw textiles comprises treating the material with an aq. bleach bath contg. H2O2 and a N-acyl-lactam of formula (I) as bleach activator. In (I) n = 3-5; and R = 1-5C alkyl. Pref. the mole ratio of (H2O2):(I) in the bath is (1-5):1, pref. (1.1-1.5):1, w.r.t. active CO gps. in (I), and the bath liq. has a pH of 5-13, pref. 7-9. The process may be operated as a continuous process using an impregnation method, pref. comprising wetting and impregnating, laying down cold for 0.5-24 hrs. or heating to 95-120 degrees C. with steam, and then washing. Or a discontinuous extn. method may be used, in which the material is wetted and impregnated with the bleach in the cold or at 40-130 degrees C., the wt. of the bleach bath being 3-50 times that of the unbleached material.
