Abstract: Process for manufacturing an optical coupler for polymer light-guides with the aid of the ultrasonic welding technique. The fibres (2, 6) are heated to a temperature of 50 to 250 DEG C for 0.2 to 3 hours before welding. The polymer light-guides are introduced into a small plastic tube (5), which during the welding operation fuses with the said light-guides to form a unit. In another embodiment, a mixer rod, which has the same refractive index as the core material of the polymeric optical fibres, can be introduced into the small plastic tube (5), the polymeric optical fibres are brought into contact with it and the small plastic tube, the mixer rod and the fibres are welded to one another under the effect of ultrasound. … …

Abstract: An ATR spectrometer contains an optical probe with a sensor made of a transparent material, a light feeding line and a light carrying-off line. The spectrometer is characterised in that the sensor contains an optical polymer or a mixture of different optical polymers. The probe of the disclosed spectrometer has the advantage of being economical and extremely flexible, so that it may be adapted to the concentration range of the solution to be tested. The existing gap between concentrations that may be measured by conventional transmission spectroscopy and by state of the art ATR spectroscopy is thus closed.

Abstract: Method for the production of an optical coupler for polymer light-guides by arranging the light-guides in the same direction and bundling them by means of a plastic shrink-fit sleeve. In this method, two to 10 polymer light-guides are arranged in the same direction and bundled and a plastic tube is slipped over the mixing zone. Subsequently, a piece of plastic shrink-fit sleeve is pushed over the plastic tube and the shrink-fit sleeve is heated to a temperature at which it contracts. The shrinking temperature of the shrink-fit sleeve is within the thermoelastic temperature range of the plastic tube. The light-guide bundles may be stretched during or after heating.

Abstract: The core is mfd. of glass or pref. PMMA fibre, and the sheath of another material (e.g. fluoropolymer) having a lower refractive index and a thickness of pref. 0.1 to 15 microns. The surface of the sheath is uniformly or regionally roughened, stippled, shaped, brushed, embossed or indented by micro-mechanical or chemical treatment so as to be selectively activated for emission of light.

Abstract: It is known that a plurality of optical fibres made from plastic or coated with a polymer material can be combined to form a bundle of optical fibres aligned in the same direction, at first temporarily and then permanently. The temporary fixing includes the step of establishing the relative mutual alignments of the individual optical fibres in the permanently fixed bundle. Known methods produce bundles with a non-homogeneous light distribution at the outlet and/or have insufficient tensile strength. The methods in question are complex, technically difficult to automate or entail long melt periods. According to the invention, fibre bundles with a particularly homogeneous light distribution at the outlet and capable of withstanding a tensile load of up to 70 N are produced by injection of a setting plastic melt around the temporarily fixed optical fibre bundle along a section of the bundle length for the final fixing of the individual fibres. Also disclosed are bundles of optical fibres made entirely of or merely coated with plastic.

Abstract: A shallow block (1) features a central longitudinal groove (2) in which the fibre (3) is laid for removal of a segment of its sleeve (5) by a single-edged blade (4) secured to the top of the block with its edge at right angles to the groove. Two such blocks may be juxtaposed in inverted relationship so that two segments are stripped from opposite sides of the fibre as it is drawn between the parallel blades. ADVANTAGE - Any length of sleeve can be removed easily and reproducibly without detriment to the optical properties of the fibre itself.

Abstract: In prepn. of optical couplers from polymers, coupling structure is prepd. using injection moulding process. Optical couplers consisting of mixing region and lightwave guide ends, coupling element having been prepd. by injection moulding, are claimed. ' polymer is highly transparent, partic. amorphous, and esp. poly-Me methacrylate, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyolefin, polyester, polysulphone, polyether sulphone, polyether imide, polyarylate, polyamide, or polyester carbonate. Or polymer is copolymer, partic. of Me methacrylate and pentafluoro-n-propyl methacrylate, or polymer blend, partic. of poly-Me methacrylate (I) and polyvinylidene fluoride, or partly crystalline polymer, partic. poly-4-methylpentene. ADVANTAGE - Couplers have high mechanical strength, readily reproducible low transit damping, general good optical properties, couplers can be mass-produced simply and economically.
