    Abstract: Aq. polymer dispersions are based on (A) 1-99 (wt.)% carboxy-functional polymer also contg. epoxy gps., (B) 1-99% copolymerisable alpha,beta-olefinically unsatd. monomer(s), (C) 0-20% anionic and/or nonionic emulsifiers or protective colloids (all w.r.t. solids) and other conventional additives. The dispersions are prepd. by free radical emulsion polymerisation of the given components at 0-150, pref. 20-100, esp. 40-90 deg.C in the presence of (D) 0.01-10, pref. 0.02-5, esp. 0.05-3% polymerisation initiator(s) w.r.t. (B), pref. without addn. of emulsifiers and/or protective colloids. Pref. the amt. of each of (A) and (B) is 5-95 wt.%. The compsn. may also contain 0.01-20% (w.r.t (B)) of monomers with max. 3 alpha,beta-ethylenically unsatd. gps. (B) consists of up to 100% methyl methacrylate and/or butyl acrlate (esp. 15-80% methyl methacrylate and 15-50% n-butyl acrylate), 0-20% (esp. 0-15%) hydorxyethyl methacryalte, 0-20% (esp. 0-15%) glycidyl methacrylate and 0-20% (esp. 0-5%) (meth)acrylic acid. The dispersions have a solids content of 5-75, pref. 10-65%.

    Abstract: The preparation of polymers free from emulsifiers and protective colloids by the free-radical initiated emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated co-polymerizable monomers, wherein the emulsion polymerization is carried out in the absence of emulsifiers and protective colloids, using water-soluble, free-radical forming initiators and with the addition, at least at the start of the polymerization, of at least 0.01% by weight, based on the total amount of monomers, of poly-(ethylenically unsaturated) monomers, and the polymers can be obtained in the form of aqueous or non-aqueous dispersions or in the form of powder. The use of the polymers in the form of dispersions or powders for modifying polymer materials and polymer raw materials and for the production of shaped articles and films.

    Abstract: Copolymers prepared by emulsion or solution copolymerization, initiated by free radicals, of unsaturated copolymerizable monomers, the copolymers being built up from (a) 1-45% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, (b) 0.5-30% by weight of a surface-active crotonic acid ester, (c) 30-85% by weight of methacrylic acid esters or acrylic acid esters of aliphatic (C1-C18)-alcohols, (d) 0-40% by weight of other ethylenically unsaturated comonomers, (e) 0-3% by weight of polyethylenically unsaturated compounds and (f) 0-5% by weight of molecular weight regulators, and, if appropriate, the free acid groups of the copolymers subsequently having been partly or completely neutralized by addition of bases and converted into water-soluble or colloidally water-dispersible copolymer salts. In addition, processes for the preparation of the copolymers by solution or emulsion copolymerization and, if appropriate, subsequent conversion thereof into the copolymer salts, and the use of the products as viscosity-increasing and rheology-modifying substances in aqueous systems, in particular aqueous dispersions, preferably for thickening emulsion paints, emulsion gloss lacquers, textile printing pastes and paper printing pastes, and furthermore as sizing agents in the textile industry.

    Abstract: Emulsifier- and protective colloid-free polymers are prepd. by the radical-initiated emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsatd. copolymerisable monomers. First, (i) a poly-ethylenically unsatd. copolymerisable monomer-or partial monomer amt. of at least 0.01 (esp. 0.01-20) wt.%, w.r.t. total monomer amt., is pre-polymerised, opt. alone or esp. together with a partial amt. of the mono-ethylenically unsatd. monomer, in aq. emulsion, in the absence of emulsifiers and protective colloids, and by using one or more water-soluble radical-forming initiators. (ii) The balanace of the mono-ethylenically unsatd. monomers, opt. that of the poly-ethylenically unsatd. monomers and opt. the remaining initiator amt. is added and the polymerisation of the mixt. is completed. The polymers and polymer dispersions prepd. are claimed per se.
