Abstract: Printing process uses printing pastes contg. alkaline matl. as fixative. The fixing of the dye is carried out by treatment with steam at over 0.5 atmos. pressure. Steam treatment is at 0.5-2.5 (0.5-1.5) atmos. for 3-20 (6-10) mins. A mercerised cotton fabric is printed with a paste contg. Vat Orange 7, Na2CO3, urea and usual thickeners, and steamed for 15 mins. at 1.5 atmos. After oxidn., rinsing etc. a fast orange print with good yield is obtained. Reduction potential of the cellulose is presence of alkali is increased at the steam pressures used, so that addn. of reducing agents to the paste is eliminated. The printing pastes and printed material before fixing, have almost unlimited storage stability. After reduction by the cellulose and reaction with the alkali to a soluble form, the dye is absorbed, fixed and oxidised as usual. Other dyes used for the background are fixed simultaneously.
