Thiophene derivatives are important intermediates in the production of pharmaceuticals and plant protection agents.

Abstract: A coating composition comprising a soluble oligomer of substituted thiophenes with or without a soluble polymer produces, on application from solution in a dipolar aprotic solvent, firmly adhering electrically conductive coats on non-conducting or semiconducting materials. In this way it is possible to produce antistatic films and fibres and shapes for the purposes of electronics and electrical equipment.

Abstract: The intrinsically electrically conductive polymers, preferably oligomers, are, in the oxidised form, fully soluble in dipolar aprotic solvents at room temperature and contain structural units derived from at least one monomer of the formula (I) in which R is a C1-C12-alkoxy group or -O(CH2CH2O)nCH3 where n = 1 to 4 and R is a hydrogen atom, a C1-C12-alkyl group, a C1-C12-alkoxy group or -O(CH2CH2O)nCH3 where n = 1 to 4, or R and R together are -(OCH2)m-CH2 or -O(CH2)m-O- where m = 1 to 12. These polymers are prepared by electrochemical polymerisation of at least one monomer of this formula (I) in the presence of a conductive salt, where the anode has a specific surface area of at least 0.01 m /g and preferably has a grid, sponge, woven or felt structure, the electrolyte solvent is dipolar and aprotic, and the electrolyte system is only agitated gently, or not at all, relative to the anode. The polymers according to the invention are particularly suitable for coating purposes.

Abstract: Process for the preparation of thiophene ethers. Thiophene ethers having relatively large side groups can easily be obtained if 2-, 3-, 2,3-, 2,4- or 3,4-C1-C3-alkoxythiophenes are reacted with a compound containing an OH group in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The novel thiophene ethers are suitable as monomers for electrically conducting polymers.

Abstract: Prepn. of 4,4'-dialkoxy-2,2'-bithiophenes of formula (I) comprises reacting a 3-alkoxythiophene with a metalorganic cpd. then reacting with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and metallising the trimethylsilyl-3-alkoxythiophene in position 5 - under the catalytic action of a copper (II) halide in 5,5'-ditrimethylsilyl-4,4- dialkoxy-2,2'-bithiophene then acid hydrolysis with cleavage of the trimethylsilyl gp. to give (I). In (I) R1 = opt branched 1-12C alkoxy or -O(CH2CH2O)nCH3; n= 1-4; and R2 = H, halogen or opt. branched 1-12C alkyl. Pref. the 3-alkoxythiophene is reacted with butyllithium, esp. in a stoichiometric ratio. USE/ADVANTAGE - Electropolymerisation or chemical oxidn. of (I) provides intrinsic electroconducting polymers with stability and capacity properties, e.g. esp. high optical transmission. Polymerisation of (I) (alkoxy = methoxy) gives high positive charge per thiophene-units. Polymers from it, have better oxidn. stability than the 3,3'-derivs.

Abstract: The invention relates to electrically conducting polymers which are obtainable as self-supporting films or composite bodies and which contain structural units which are derived from at least one monomer of the formula (I) (I) wherein R1 represents a C1-C12-alkoxy group and R2 represents a C1-C12-alkyl group.
