Abstract: Monoazo compounds of the formula wherein A stands for -NH-CO-NH-, -NH-CO-CO-NH- or -NH-CO-NH-CO-, B stands for -CO- or -CO-CO-, R1, R2 and R3 each stands for hydrogen, chlorine, methyl, methoxy, ethoxy, nitro or a group of the formula -COOR with R being hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and R4 stands for hydrogen, chlorine, methyl, methoxy or ethoxy, with the proviso that when B stands for -CO- and when (1) A stands for -NH-CO-NH- (a) either R4 is different from hydrogen, or (b) at least one of the radicals R1, R2 and R3 stands for nitro or COOR, or (c) at least two of the radicals R1, R2 and R3 are different from hydrogen, and when (2) A stands for -NH-CO-CO-NH- or -NH-CO-NH-CO' (a) R4 is not in the 6-position or (b) at least one of the radicals R1, R2 and R3 is different from hydrogen, are obtained by diazotizing compounds of the formula and coupling the resulting diazonium compounds with compounds of the formula The compounds are coloring matters and are suitable in particular for pigmenting high molecular weight materials.

Abstract: 1350221 Benzoxanthene or Benzothioxanthene dyes FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 24 May 1971 [23 May 1970] 16553/71 Heading C4P The invention comprises benzoxanthene and benzothioxanthene dyestuffs comprising a mixture of isomers of the formulae wherein X represents an oxygen or sulphur atom; R represents an optionally substituted alkyl radical, an acyl or an arylsulphonyl radical; R 1 and R 2 represent H, halogen, alkyl, aryl, acyl, acyloxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxy, nitro, alkylthio, or alkylsulphonyl or R 1 and R 2 together form a benzene ring; R 3 and R 4 represent H, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, alkoxycarbonyl or nitrile; R 5 and R 6 represent H or an optionally substituted alkoxy group. The dyes may be prepared by heating a benzoxanthene or benzothioxanthene 3,4-dicarboxylic anhydride of formula or a di-acid or ester of formula where R 7 is H or alkyl with a compound of formula and/or where R s is H or OH, in the presence of an alkali at 150-260‹ C. and subsequently alkylating or acylating the obtained compound. At least equimolar amounts of the reactants are used. Suitable alkalis are alkali metal hydroxides, acetates and carbonates. The dyes give orange and red shades on synthetic polymeric materials, particularly for dyeing synthetic polymers in the melt. They are also suitable for the colouring of oils, lakes and waxes.
