    Abstract: Copolymers (I) have an acid number of 5-100 mg/g and reach a solution viscosity of 100 mPa.s in toluene at 23 deg C at a concentration of 40 wt.% or less. (I) comprises: (a) 50-99 wt.% (substituted) styrene(s); and (b) 1-50 wt.% monoolefinically unsaturated ester of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and at least monohydric, 1-20C (cyclo)aliphatic alcohol and optionally other monomer(s). Copolymers (I) have an acid number of 5-100 mg/g and reach a solution viscosity of 100 mPa.s in toluene at 23 deg C at a concentration of 40 wt.% or less. (I) are derived from a monomer mixture comprising: (a) 50-99 wt.% styrene and/or halogen-, alkyl-, alkoxy- or aryl-substituted styrene(s) with 1-20 carbon (C) atoms in the substituents; (b) 1-50 wt.% monoolefinically unsaturated ester of dibasic olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and at least monohydric, 1-20C aliphatic, linear, branched or cyclic alcohol; optionally (c) 0-20 wt.% olefinically unsaturated compound containing carboxyl groups and free from ester groups; and optionally (d) 0-30 wt/% other ethylenically unsaturated monomer with at least one double bond polymerizable under the reaction conditions. An Independent claim is also included for the production of copolymers (I).

Also claimed is the prepn. of (I), by making polymers (A) and (B), opt. neutralising or partly neutralising (A) and (B) in water, combining these polymers, and opt. making polymer (C) in the form of latex particles by emulsion polymerisation of unsatd. monomers in presence of (A) and (B).
