Water-insoluble mono-azo dyes of general formula in which X is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine, R 1 is an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms which may be substituted by hydroxy, alkoxy or acyloxy groups and R 2 is an acyl group which may be substituted are prepared by coupling the diazo compound of an amine of formula with a coupling component of formula in which the symbols are as above, preferably at a pH of 1-5. The dyes may be used to give violet-blue shades on acetate silk, polyester fibres.

    Abstract: The invention comprises polyazo dyes of formula:- where one X is H and the other SO3H, Y is H, NO2 or MeCONH, Z is H or N=N-R3, Z1 is H or N=N-R4 and the R's are aromatic residues. The dyes are made in conventional fashion by coupling 1 mol of 3, 31-dihydroxydiphenylamine with at least 1 mol of a diazotized aminodiphenylamine sulphonic acid which may have NO2 or MeCONH groups, and, if required with up to 4 mols of any appropriate diazo-compound. The dyes colour leather brown shades being obtained. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing leather, tris- and tetra-, penta- and octa-kis-azo dyes derived from benzeneic and naphthalenic components being obtained.
