Abstract: Copolymers which may be block, of a compound of the formula CH2=CHR and a compound of the formula where R represents a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl, aryl, or alkaryl group, Ar an aromatic radical, and R1 represents an alkyl group, an alicyclic ring or an aromatic radical, in which the aromatic radical or radicals may be unsubstituted or substituted by one or more alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, or dialkylamino radicals or halogen atoms or wherein the represents a polycyclic heterocyclic radical containing only one hetero atom and at least one carbocyclic aromatic ring, and where n is an integer in the range of 1 to 12, are made by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst comprising titanium tetrahalide an aluminium trialkyl and/or an aluminium alkyl halide. The copolymerization may be carried out by introducing the monomers together or sequentially to the polymerization zone, and the reaction may be effected in bulk, or in the presence of diluent. The titanium tetrahalide is preferably reduced to the trivalent form either by treatment with an organoaluminium compound, or reduction by hydrogen. The copolymers are recovered by conventional techniques, e.g. addition of n-butanol. The copolymers may be fractionated by treatment with n-hexane, methanol, and acetone. Exemplified copolymers are propylene, or ethylene, and N-methyl-N-undecenyl aniline, propylene and N-methyl-N-butenyl aniline, or N-methyl-N-pentenyl aniline, or N-ethyl-N-butenyl dimethyl aminoaniline, or N-phenyl-N-butenyl-beta-naphthyl amine, or N-methyl - N - pentenyl - alpha - naphthyl amine, or N-alkyl carbazole, or N-butenyl indole, and block copolymers of propylene and N-methyl-N-undecenyl aniline.

Abstract: Copolymers, e.g. block copolymers, of an olefine of the formula CH2 = CH-R, where R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, or alkaryl group, with an alpha-alkenylenaryl ether of the general formula wherein n is zero or a whole number in the range of 1 to 12, X is a direct bond or an aromatic or alicyclic ring and Ar is an aromatic nucleus, and wherein the aromatic or alicyclic nuclei may be condensed substituted, or unsubstituted are made by effecting the copolymerization of the monomers together or sequentially, at a pressure of 1 to 12 atmospheres and a temperature of 30 DEG to 150 DEG C. in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta type catalyst. Exemplified copolymers are, propylene and 11-(2,6-dimethylphenoxy) - undecylene - (1) as a normal copolymer and as a block, propylene and 5-(2,6-dimethylphenoxy) - pentene - (1), propylene and 4 - (2,6 - dimethylphenoxy) - butene - (1), propylene and 11 - (naphthoxy) - undecene-(1), propylene and 4 - (alphanaphthoxy) - butene-(1), propylene and 11-(beta-naphthoxy)-undecene-(1), propylene and 5-(alpha-naphthoxy) - pentene - (1), a normal and block copolymer of propylene and 4-phenoxybutene-(1), propylene and 4-(4-methoxyphenoxy)-butene-(1), propylene and 5-(4-bromophenoxy)-pentene-(1), propylene and 5-(4-diethylaminophenoxy) - pentene - (1), and propylene and 3 - (4 - diphenyl ether) - propene - (1). The catalysts may be preformed and the copolymerization effected in bulk, or in a solvent or diluent. The following catalysts are used in the Examples: (1) a mixture of Al(C2H5)3 and the product obtained by reducing TiCl4 with a mixture of ethylaluminium sesquichloride and Al(C2H5)3, and (2) diethylaluminium monochloride and the product obtained by reducing TiCl4 with ethylaluminium sesquichloride.
