Abstract: Olefines are polymerized by use of a catalyst comprising a salt of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal and an organo-metallic compound of an alkali, an alkaline earth or an earth metal or of zinc, in the presence of a diluent and wherein the reaction mixture continuously circulates from the reaction zone to a heat exchange zone and then back to the reaction zone and characterized in that the current of mixture outside the reaction zone is maintained in a state of laminar flow. In the example the polymerization ingredients are ethylene, a hydrogenated hydrocarbon fraction, titanium trichloride and aluminium ethyl sesquichloride and the reaction is carried out in a specified continuous flow reactor. Two reaction zones may be used if completion of the polymerization is desired. Specifications 799,392 799,823 and 801,031 also are referred to.
