Abstract: A water-in-oil dispersion or emulsion comprises an oil-soluble copolymer derived from ethylene and a compound of the formula wherein R and R1 each represent an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical and R and R1 may be the same or different, or R and R1 together represent an alkylene radical. Preferably, the copolymers are of ethylene and N-methyl-N-vinyl acetamide or N-vinyl caprolactam. The examples describe the emulsification of solutions of natural and/or synthetic waxes, and/or solid paraffins and/or polyolefins.ALSO:Water-in-oil dispersions or emulsions for use in ointments or other pharmacy and cosmetic preparations are obtained by using as dispersing agent an oil-soluble copolymer derived from ethylene and an N-vinyl carbonamide (see Div. C3). Example 9 describes the preparation of an ointment by dissolving stearyl alcohol, a copolymer of ethylene and N-vinyl caprolactam in liquid paraffin or olive oil, adding glycerin and then stirring in water. Examples 10 and 11 describe a similar preparation.

Abstract: Vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymers having a molar proportion of vinyl acetate to ethylene of below 1:5 are completely or partially hydrolysed by subjecting to an ester interchange reaction, in the presence of catalytic amounts of acids or alkalies, with a primary, preferably aliphatic alcohol with at least 4 carbon atoms, and continuously removing the low molecular weight esters formed from the reaction mixture by distillation together with the excess alcohol. In the examples, the catalysts used are H2SO4, NaOH, and KOH, the alcohols used are n-butanol and 2-ethyl hexanol, and the product is precipitated with methanol. Other methods specified for isolating the product are the removal of the alcohol by steam distillation or by straight distillation including removing the last traces of the alcohol from the polymer melt under reduced pressure. The reaction may be continuous or discontinuous. The products may be cross-linked with diisocyanate.
