Abstract: 1492040 Articles comprising cellulosic particles HOECHST AG 20 Dec 1974 [24 Dec 1973] 55196/74 Heading C3F [Also in Division B5] Cellulose ethers, inherently water-soluble but rendered at least partly water-insoluble, but still water-absorbent by cross-linking or other chemical modification, are uniformly distributed in, or over a surface of, a shaped article composed of a film- or fibre-forming polymer which is insoluble in water. The cellulose ether may be carboxymethyl-, hydroxyethyl-, or methylhydroxyethyl-cellulose and is preferably in the form of particles of a size within the range of from 0À01 to 2 mm. Several modifying agents are used, epichlorohydrin most commonly. The shaped articles in the examples are films of hydrated cellulose (from viscose), cellulose acetate and hydroxyethyl cellulose and fibres of polyethylene.

Abstract: This invention relates to an improvement in the process for the production of water-adsorbing, but at least partially water-insoluble cellulose ethers in which cellulose is alkalized in a liquid reaction medium and etherified in a manner such that by etherification only an at least largely water-soluble carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose or methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose is produced, and in which the cellulose is reacted in an alkaline reaction medium before, during, or after the etherification with a modification agent reactive with the still free hydroxyl groups of the cellulose anhydro glucose groups, said modification agent having one of the formulae I II in which R1 is hydroxyl, an acylamino or esterified carbamino group, and R2 is hydrogen or a carboxyl group, THE IMPROVEMENT COMPRISING EFFECTING ALKALIZATION, ETHERIFICATION, AND MODIFICATION IN A LIQUID REACTION MEDIUM OTHER THAN ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL.

Abstract: 1526264 Modified cellulose ethers HOECHST AG 29 Aug 1975 [31 Aug 1974] 35709/75 Heading C3A [Also in Division D1] A modified cellulose ether for improving the water-absorbing capacity and absorbtivity of a fibrous material is a carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl hydroxy-ethyl cellulose, methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose or hydroxyethyl cellulose which has been modified with a compound of one of the formulae: in which R 1 represents a hydroxyl, acyl amino or esterified carbamino group and R 2 represents a carboxyl group or hydrogen. The modified cellulose ether is applied to the fibrous material in conjunction with a fixing agent, the fixing agent being capable of reacting both with the modified cellulose ether and with the fibrous material, and being selected from carbamates, linear and cyclic urea-formaldehyde condensation products and derivatives thereof, melamineformaldehyde condensation products and derivatives thereof, vinyl acetate homopolymers, acrylic acid-based copolymers and vinyl acetate based copolymers, and is fixed on the material (seeDivisions D1 andD2).
