    Abstract: Modified novolaks based on phenols which are trifunctional with respect to formaldehyde and contain, as modifying components, terpenes and unsaturated carboxylic acids or derivatives of these compounds, the weight ratio between the terpenes and the unsaturated carboxylic acids or derivatives thereof being in the range from 98.5:2.5 to 2.5:98.5 and the weight ratio between the phenolic component and the sum of the modified components being in the range from 95:5 to 5:95 and the modified novolaks having a melting point greater than 45 DEG C. Process for the preparation of the modified novolaks by admixing the modifying components indicated with non-modified novolaks in the necessary amounts at temperatures between 80 DEG and 300 DEG C. Use of the modified novolaks as reinforcing resins for rubber and elastomers, as tackifying agents for rubber, as binders for friction linings, curable molding compositions, impregnants, coatings, paints and binders for finely divided inorganic substrates.

    Abstract: Vulcanisable rubber mixts. (I), with improved adhesion to steel cord- or textile fibre-based reinforcements, are claimed, together with the vulcanisation of such mixts.; (I) contain vulcanisable rubber, adhesion promoters (II), vulcanising agents, hardening agents, fillers and the usual additives; the novelty is that (II) is a modified novolak which is obtd. by simultaneous reaction of a polyhydric phenol with an aldehyde and an unsatd. hydrocarbon (III) at elevated temp. in the presence of an acid catalyst, and which contains no residual free phenol. (II) is produced from resorcinol, 1-10C aldehyde (pref. formaldehyde or a source thereof) and (III) (pref. a vinylaromatic cpd.), with mol. ratio resorcinol:(III):aldehyde = (1:0.1:0.3)-(1:1.5:0.95), pref. (1:0.4:0.5)-(1:1.1:0.8); (I) contain up to 20 wt.% (II).

    Abstract: The ski described is characterised by the use of a selected fibre-reinforced material which comprises a sheet-like textile material and a thermosetting resin, the fibre fraction being 30 - 70 % by weight, and the fibres comprising synthetic fibres for at least 30 % by weight. This material is distinguished by a good flexibility and high recovering forces and lends the ski excellent running characteristics, for example good vibration damping.
