Abstract: Acetoacetic esters of polyesters containing at least one hydroxy group are prepared by reacting diketene and the hydroxy polyester at 20-120 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst which is (a) at least one tertiary phosphine PR1R2R3 and/or (b) at least one carboxylic acid betaine or a sulphonic acid betaine or a carbamic acid betaine where R1- 3 represent alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl aryl or aralkyl groups and R4 represents an alkylene or arylene radical which may contain ether or azo linkages. Example 3 describes the preparation of the acetoacetic ester of a monohydroxy polyester obtained from adipic acid and diethylene glycol and Example 4, the ester of a trihydroxy polyester obtained from adipic acid, diethylene glycol and glycerol.ALSO:Acetoacetic esters are prepared by reacting diketene with a compound containing at least one hydroxy group at 20-120 DEG C. using as a catalyst (a) at least one tertiary phosphine PR1R2R3 and/or (b) at least one carboxylic acid betaine or a sulphonic acid betaine or a sulphamic acid betaine where R1- 3 represent alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkenyl radicals and R4 represents an alkylene or arylene radical which may include ether or azo linkages. When the catalyst is a betaine, small amounts of acetic acid or acetic anhydride may be added to the reaction mixture. The preferred catalysts are triphenyl phosphine and trimethylaminoacetic acid betaine. Specified hydroxy compounds are mono-and polyhydric alcohols, phenol, polyhydric phenols, enols, carbohydrates and polyesters and polyethers containing free hydroxy groups (see Division C3). Examples relate to the methyl and phenyl esters of acetoacetic acid.

Abstract: 1,132,657. Concentrating glycol ether-hexadienic acid mixtures. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 21 April, 1966 [24 April, 1965], No. 17520/66. Heading C2C. The concentration of one or more glycol ethers and hexadienic acids in an aqueous solution thereof are increased by heating the aqueous solution for 0À5 to 5 hours in the temperature range 70‹ to 150‹ C. but below the boiling temperature of the solution and isolating the organic phase which separates on heating from the remaining aqueous phase. The solutions treated suitably contain 10 to 30% of the glycol ether(s) and 1 to 10% of the hexadienic acids, and after treatment the organic phase typically contains about 10% water. Suitable glycol ethers are of the type where n is 1 to 3, R 1 and R 2 are each C 1-4 alkyl and suitable hexadienic acids are the four geometrical isomers of hexadienic-2-4-acid, e.g. sorbic acid.

Abstract: 1,174,509. Allyl and methallyl chloride. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 25 Sept., 1967 [23 Sept., 1966], No. 43554/67. Heading C2C. Allyl or methallyl chloride is made by reacting oxygen with (a) mixtures of propylene or isobutylene and hydrogen chloride and/or (b) monochloropropane or monochloroisobutane in the presence of a catalyst consisting of tellurium, tellurium compound or mixtures thereof; at least one basic nitrogen compound or the salt thereof and at least one transition metal capable of forming hetereopoly acids or the compounds thereof.
