Abstract: The novel silver catalysts contain from 3 to 20% by weight of silver and from 0.003 to 0.05% by weight of potassium, rubidium, caesium or a mixture thereof as promoter on a heat-resistant, porous support material, percentages by weight in each case being based on the weight of the catalyst. They are prepared by applying the silver and the promoter to the support material by impregnation by means of solutions containing at least one silver compound and at least one promoter compound, where the entire amount of silver and only from 15 to 45% by weight of the entire amount of promoter are applied in a first impregnation step, the impregnated support material is heated in order to reduce the applied silver compound to metallic silver, and the remainder of the entire amount of promoter is applied in a second impregnation step.

They are prepared by applying the silver and promoter by impregnating the support in two steps with interim drying, where from 55 to 85% by weight of the total amount of silver and from 15 to 45% by weight of the total amount of promoter are applied in the first impregnation step and the remainder of the entire amount of silver and promoter is applied in the second impregnation step.
