Abstract: RECOVERY OF PYRCLYTIC ENERGY IN THE PRODUCTION OF VINYL CHLORIDE BY SUBJECTING 1,2-DICHLOROETHANE TO AN INCOMPLETE THERMAL CRACKING REACTION Pyrolytic energy is recovered in the production of vinyl chloride, wherein liquid 1,2-dichloroethane is preheated under pressure, evaporated and introduced in gaseous form into a craking zone, subjected to an incomplete thermal cracking reaction therein, the resulting hot cracked gases maintained under pressure are cooled and succesively separated into their constituents in a plurality of distilling zones for removal of hydrogen chloride, vinyl chloride, and high boilers therefrom, and for recovery of unreacted 1,2dichloroethane. To this end, the hot cracked gases are cooled in at least one heat exchanger of which the jacket side has a heat transfer agent or coolant passed through it, the heat transfer agent or coolant with the heat absorbed therein being removed for use elsewhere in the process.
