Abstract: Emulsifier-containing plastics dispersions which serve as a binder for dispersion paints, should contain polymers forming a film at room temperature and having a high wet adhesion. Suitable polymers are prepared by polymerization of olefinically unsaturated monomers initiated by free radical-forming agents, especially in the presence of an emulsifier. As emulsifier there is used a salt of an acyl ester of the hydroxymethane-phosphonic acid. The emulsifier may remain in the dispersion ready-for-use without involving disadvantages for the wet adhesion.

Aqueous solution or dispersion of a hydrolyzed copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride having a molar ratio of styrene to maleic anhydride superior to 1 : 1 and a molecular weight (numerical average) of more than 400, characterized in that the copolymer has a molar ratio in the range of from 1.5 : 1 to 6 : 1 and a molecular weight of from 500 to 80 000, 1 to 60 percent of the carboxyl groups of the copolymer are neutralized, and the pH of the solution or dispersion is below 7.

Abstract: Vinyl polymers are prepared by emulsion polymerization of olefinically unsaturated compounds in the presence of surface-active compounds. As emulsifiers there are particularly suitable water-soluble salts of alkane phosphonic acids or of alkane phosphonic acid-monoalkyl esters. Said salts may also be used in combination with other surface-active compounds. The plastics dispersion obtained is used above all as a binder for pigments and fillers in dispersion paints.
