Abstract: Liq. crystal (LC) mixt. has (a) a temp. range showing a chiral smectic c-phase and (b) a temp. range showing a smectic a-phase. The difference between the conical angles at (Tc/a -10) and (Tc/a 40) deg C is 10 degrees or less in the temp. range (a), with Tc/a being the phase transition temp. between the c- and a-phases. Also claimed are display devices in which the LC layer contains the above mixt.
