Abstract: In this process, hexitol and carboxylic acid are reacted in a molar ratio of 1 : 0.5 to 1 : 5 in the presence of alkaline esterification catalysts and in the presence of an inert gas atmosphere, first at atmospheric pressure at a temperature of 210 to 260 DEG C until an acid number of 2 to 25 has been obtained, the resulting water being removed, and the reaction is then continued in vacuo and at a temperature of 210 to 260 DEG C, the resulting water continuing to be removed, whereupon the reaction product is bleached with hydrogen peroxide at a temperature from 50 to 100 DEG C. This process gives carboxylic esters of anhydrohexitol of a colour of good quality. They represent surface-active substances, in particular valuable emulsifiers and gliding agents.
