Abstract: A process for producing a polyoxymethylene copolymer having improved thermal stability and/or a high degree of polymerisation comprises copolymerising trioxane as a main monomer with a cyclic ether or a cyclic formal as a comonomer in the presence of 1 x 10 % to 1 x 10 % by mole (based on the total amount of the monomers) of a catalyst comprising boron trifluoride or a coordination compound thereof, wherein unwanted decomposition and side reactions are controlled by keeping to below 1 x 10 % by mole (based on the total amount of the monomers) the total content of impurities such as would give short product chains and/or unstable terminal groups in the copolymer, and cooling the obtained product to a temperature of 45 DEG C or below within 30 seconds after the completion of the copolymerisation to deactivate the catalyst.
