    Abstract: The invention comprises dyestuffs of formula: where Z is H, SO3H or -N = N-R1, W is H or -N = N-R2, R1 and R2 are aromatic residues, X is a single bond, -CH = CH-, -NHCONH-, -CO-, -O-, -S-, -NH or CONH-, Y is H or So3H with the proviso that g is H if Z is SO3H, and the residues a may contain substituents other than OH groups and when two SO3H groups are present they must be in the 2,4-, 3,6- and 4,6-positions. They may be made according to reactions set out schematically below or by using variations thereof in the direction of coupling which lead to the same result: 1-amino-8-naphthol-mono-or 2,4 -, 3,6 - or 4,6 - di - sulphonic acids: (amine --->) 3,31-dihydroxydiphenylamine. The (amine --->) may correspond to the dyestuff aminonaphthol sulphonic acid diaminodiphenyl-X compound. The products dye leather in violet, dark green, blue or black shades. Examples are provided illustrating the preparation of the dyestuffs and their use in dyeing leather the components used corresponding to being aniline, 4 - chloro - and nitro - and 2 - chloro - 4-nitro-anilines, aniline-2-carboxylic acid, 2- and 3 - nitro - and 2 - chloroaniline - 4 - sulphonic acids, 4 - nitroaniline - 2 - sulphonic acid, aniline - 4 - mono - and 2,5 - di - sulphonic acids, 4 - methyl - and chloro - aniline - 3 - sulphonic acids and 1-naphthalene-4-sulphonic acid, the aminonaphthol sulphonic acids being the 4- and 5-mono- and 2,4-, 3,6- and 4,6-di-sulphonic acids, the diphenyls being 4,41-diaminodiphenyl and its 3,31-dicarboxy and methyl derivatives, 4,41-diaminodiphenyl-urea, sulphide and amine, 4,41 - diamino - 3,31 - diphenoxyacetic acid, 4,41 - diaminobenzophenone, 4,41 - diaminodiphenylether - and stilbene - 2,21 - disulphonic acids and N-(p- and m-aminobenzoyl)-1,3-diaminobenzene, and the components corresponding to (amine -\sY), when not as indicated above compounded from the diphenyl X compound and reactants already listed are aniline-4-mono - and 2,5 - disulphonic acids, 4 - chloroaniline - 3 - sulphonic acid, 1 - amino - 8-naphthol - 3,6 - disulphonic acid, 1 - amino - 2-naphthol - 4 - sulphonic acid, 4 - amino - 41-nitrodiphenylamine - 21 - sulphonic acid and 4-amino - 1,11 - azobenzene - 41 - sulphonic acid.
