Copper phthalocyanine having a chlorine content of 0À1-1À0 wt. per cent is prepared by heating phthalonitrile with CuCl in a molar ratio of about 4 :1 in the presence of 5-30 wt. per cent of urea (based on the amount of phthalonitrile) at 140-350‹ C. In Example 1, anhydrous sodium sulphate is also present in the reaction mixture.
