(I) is ammonium polyphosphate (IA) in a concn. of 5-45 (wt.)% w.r.t. the polymer, pref. in the form of particles with a core of individual (IA) particles and shell of 0.5-25% water-sol., opt. cured synthetic resin, esp. a polycarbodiimide obtd. from a polyisocyanate with a carbodiimidisation catalyst, a polyurethane obtd. from a polyisocyanate and a poly-OH cpd., a polyisocyanurate obtd. from a polyisocyanate and a trimerisation catalyst, a polyurea obtd. from a polyisocyanate and water, a cured melamine/HCHO resin or a cured epoxide resin. (IIIA) is melamine (derivs.), (iso)cyanuric acid (derivs.) or a condensn. prod. of ethyleneurea and HCHO; and (IIIB) is (di)pentaerythritol (derivs.). The compsn. contains 1-25% (III) and 50-175% (II), whilst the ratio of (IA):(III) is 1-10:1 and the ratio of (II) to (IA)+(III) is 1-15:1. The polymer is a thermosetting material, pref. usnatd. polyester resin and pref. reinforced with glass fibres.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a process for making a particulate agent stable to hydrolysis based on free-flowing, pulverulent ammonium polyphosphate by treating the ammonium polyphosphate with a thermosetting, artificial resin being water-insoluble when cured. More specifically, the disclosure provides for the ammonium polyphosphate, an aliphatic alcohol as a diluent, and a melamine/formaldehyde-resin or phenol/formaldehyde-resin to be placed in an autoclave and intimately mixed at room temperature; for the mixture to be heated to a temperature of about 80 DEG to about 180 DEG C. and allowed to remain over a period of 15 to 240 minutes at that temperature and under the pressure corresponding to the vapor pressure of the diluent; for the diluent to be separated and for the product so obtained to be dried.
