    Abstract: Polyethylene is stabilized by the incorporation or 0.01 to 4% p of a terpene substituted phenol and/or a condensation product thereof with an aliphatic aldehyde, and/or a partially hydrogenated derivative of said phenol and/or a condensation thereof with an aliphatic aldehyde. Specified stabilizers are isobornyl-o-cresol, isobornyl-1:2:4-xylenol and a hydrogenated derivative thereof, di-isobornyl-p-cresol, 6:61 - methylene - bis - (2 - isobornyl - 4 - methyl phenol) and a hydrogenated derivative thereof. The stabilizer may, if desired, be added during polymerization. The examples illustrate the stabilization of low-pressure polyethylene produced, for example, as described in Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 801,031.

    Abstract: Compositions of polyethylene, e.g. polyethylene produced by the low-pressure polymerization process, comprise from 0.003 to 4% of an aromatic thiol, preferably a terpene substituted aromatic thiol, a terpene thiol, or a naphthene thiol of molecular weight at least 150. The thio-compound may be incorporated during the polymerization process. The aromatic thiol may be a -thionaphthol, b -thionaphthol, 4,41-di-mercaptodiphenyl, 2-hexyl-a -thionaphthol, isocamphyl thiophenol, menthyl thionaphthol, isocamphyl - 1 : 3 - dimercapto - naphthalene or isobornyl-b -thionaphthol. The terpene thiol may be camphor-b -thiol, 2-menthyl-thiol or isobornyl-thiol and the naphthenethiol may be 4-butyl-2-mercaptocyclohexane, 2 : 6 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - mercaptocyclohexane or 1 - mercapto - 3 - phenyl - 4 - butylcyclopentane. The composition may also comprise 0.01 to 1% of an oxide of a 2-, 3- or 4-valent metal, such as magnesium, aluminium, calcium, iron or titanium, e.g. CaO, and/or a salt of such a metal with an organic acid of at least 9 carbon atoms, e.g. octane-, undecane-, pentadecane-, heptadecane- or tricosane-carboxylic acid, oleic or ricinoleic acid. There may also be added known stabilizers, e.g. 2 : 6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol, 4 : 41-dihydroxydiphenyl or hydroquinone, dyestuffs, pigments, e.g. carbon black, or fillers.
