Abstract: PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF ACETIC ACID of the disclosure: Acetic acid is produced by oxidizing acetaldehyde at elevated temperature in the liquid phase using oxygen or gases containing oxygen in the presence of one or more heavy metal compounds as the catalyst, and adding to the reaction mixture at the start of the addition of oxygen one or more organic peroxides which under the reaction conditions decompose, with a half-life up to 350 minutes, into free radicals in order to initiate the reaction.

Abstract: The reactivation of hydrogenation catalysts contg. Cu and opt. Cr is achieved by treating with aq. NH3 soln and then washing NH3-free with H2O. Treatment pref. is carried out with 1-5 wt.% NH2 soln. at temps. below 50 degrees C and pref. takes place in the hydrogenation zone itself. For the reactivation of catalysts used in the gas phase hydrogenation of aldehydes and ketones to the corresp. alcohols. The process is simple and has technical and economical advantages, esp. when used for in situ reactivation. The catalyst is fully reactivated.
