Abstract: A paste for use in printing fibrous materials or foils (see Group IV(c)) contains an organic or inorganic pigment, a binding agent comprising an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of one or more water-insoluble synthetic resins and at least 75% by weight of a thickener comprising a 0,5 to 1,0% by weight aqueous solution of an ammonium salt of a polyacrylic acid having a specified reduced viscosity. Specified binding agents are butadiene polymers, copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, polymers of acrylic or methacrylic acid esters or copolymers thereof with styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylic acid amide or acrylic acid, polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl acetals. The paste may also contain a polyfunctional ethylene imine compound, such as a phosphorus oxychloride-ethylene imine reaction product, and water- and/or oil-soluble aminoplasts such as urea-, alkylated urea-, dicyandiamide- or melamine-aldehyde condensation products and tetramethylol-acetylene-diurea. Examples are given.ALSO:Fibrous materials or foils are printed with a paste containing an organic or inorganic pigment, a binding agent comprising an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of one or more water-insoluble synthetic resins free from or containing reactive hydrogen atoms and at least 75% by weight of a thickener comprising a 0.5%-1% by weight aqueous solution of an ammonium salt of a polyacrylic acid having a specified reduced viscosity, the prints being finally fixed by dry heating at a temperature above 100 DEG C., or if the paste additionally contains a polyfunctional ethyleneimine compound, by steaming. The process is applicable to animal fibres, to fibres of natural or regenerated cellulose, acetyl cellulose, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, polyamides, polyesters, glass and asbestos and to paper, artificial leather and foils of all kinds. Specified binding agents are butadiene polymers, copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, polymers of acrylic or methacrylic acid esters or copolymers thereof with styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene, chloride, acrylic acid amide or acrylic acid, polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl acetals. A suitable polyfunctional ethylene imine compound is the reaction product of 1 mol phosphorus oxychloride with 3 mols ethylene imine. The paste may also contain water-and/or oil-soluble aminoplasts such as urea-, alkylated urea-, dicyandiamide- or melamine-aldehyde condensation products or tetramethylol-acetylenediurea. Examples are given.
