Abstract: Fatty acid nitriles of formula R1(R2,R3)-CN, (I), (where R1, R2 and R3 are 3-23 C aliphatic hydrocarbyl opt. substd. by an OH gp.) and glycerol, are prepd. by contacting mono-, di- and/or tri-glycerides of formula (II), in the liq. phase, with a gaseous NH3 stream, used in proportions >=200 l/kg.hr. of (II), opt. in the presence of an inert gas, at 220-300 degrees C, in the presence of Pb, Zn, Cd, Sn, Ti, Zr, Cr, Sb, Mn, Fe, Ni or Co carboxylates or sulphonates as catalysts. The prod. mixt. discharged is subjected to a phase-separation, into a fatty acid nitrile phase and a glycerol/water phase. (I) are intermediates for prim. amines and quat. ammonium cpds., which can be used as textile auxialiaries, flotation agents and cation-active surfactants. Glycerol is used in cosmetics and food industry, in prepn. of explosives, and as solvent, textile auxiliary and additive to heat- or power transfer fluids. Process allows quick direct conversion of natural fats or oils to (I) and glycerol. High yields are obtd., e.g. 93-96% of (I) and up to 95% glycerol. (I) contains 2 wt.% free fatty acids and 10 wt.% fatty acid amide by-prods.
