Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for modifying hydrophilic polymers by incorporating a modifier, characterised in that pulverulent polymer and the modifier are introduced continuously into a vertical, cylindrical mixer, mixed at a residence time of 1-10 s and a power of from 1,000 to 5,000 Wh/m powder by means of rotating blades at a blade frequency of from 100 to 300 s , while the powder passes through zones having energy dissipation densities of from 300 to 600 W/l of mixer volume.

Abstract: The invention relates to hydrophilic, swellable graft polymers which comprise, in a random distribution, from 0.5 to 50% by weight of radicals of the formula I and radicals of the general formula II from 49 to 99% by weight of acid group-containing radicals of the general formula III and from 0.1 to 2% by weight of radicals of a crosslinking agent which are derived from monomers containing at least two olefinically unsaturated double bonds, where the radicals R to R , X and Y and n and m are defined as indicated in claim 1, to their preparation, and to their use as absorbents for water and aqueous solutions.

Abstract: Improving the drying properties of hydrophilic, highly swellable hydrogels when using contact driers by use of surfactant is new. Preferably heated rollers are used having a contact surface temperature at least 120 degrees C. Nonionic or anionic surfactants are used, having an HLB at least 3, in amounts of 0.01-5 wt. %, referred to solids content of the hydrogel. The hydrogels are based on (co)polymers of hydrophilic monomers, graft (co)polymers of hydrophilic monomers on a suitable graft base, crosslinked cellulose or starch ethers or natural products swellable in aqueous liquids, e.g. guar derivatives, optionally chemically modified.
