Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain absorbents for aq. liquid without fines at all and having abrasion-fastness and high swellability by coating with non-reactive, water- insoluble film-forming polymers in hydrophilic, highly swellable hydrogels used as absorbents in hygiene products. SOLUTION: The absorbents for aq. liquid are formed by coating hydrophilic, highly swellable hydrogels with non-reactive, water-insoluble film-forming polymers. Preferable polymers have the film-forming ability within the range from -1 to 130 deg.C and are water-insoluble but permeable in water or swellable in an aq. soln. In particular, those forming polymer films having tensile strength of 0.5-15 Newton/mm and elongation at break of 100%-1,000% are used. As these polymers, there may be mentioned homo- or copolymers of vinyl esters, homo- or copolymers of acrylic or methacrylic esters and polyacetals or the like.

Abstract: Improving the drying properties of hydrophilic, highly swellable hydrogels when using contact driers by use of surfactant is new. Preferably heated rollers are used having a contact surface temperature at least 120 degrees C. Nonionic or anionic surfactants are used, having an HLB at least 3, in amounts of 0.01-5 wt. %, referred to solids content of the hydrogel. The hydrogels are based on (co)polymers of hydrophilic monomers, graft (co)polymers of hydrophilic monomers on a suitable graft base, crosslinked cellulose or starch ethers or natural products swellable in aqueous liquids, e.g. guar derivatives, optionally chemically modified.
