Abstract: Flowable alkali salts of polymeric carboxylic acids are prepd. by triturating the dry polymeric carboxylic acid with the equiv. quantity of dry alkali hydroxide and then admixing 0.005-0.3 mol. water for each mol. of alkali hydroxide, in order to initiate salt-formation. Heat of reaction released evaporates water formed in reaction and admixed water. Alkali salt is obtd. in dry, fluid form. The salts are useful as P-free builders in detergent compsns.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a process for making acetic anhydride by reacting methyl acetate and/or dimethylether with carbon monoxide, which may be used in admixture with up to 30 volume % hydrogen, under practically anhydrous conditions at temperatures of 390 DEG to 540 DEG K., under pressures of 1 to 300 bars in the presence of a catalyst system containing nickel or nickel compounds, iodine and/or its compounds as well as a tertiary or quaternary organic nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic or antimony compound. More particularly a catalyst system is used which contains vanadium or niobium or a compound thereof as an additional constituent.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for making ethylene by subjecting a gas mixture containing hydrocarbons, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and steam to a hydropyrolysis reaction. Abstract: Textiles are washed in the presence of a flat water insoluble solid cation exchanger having a calcium binding capacity of more than 5 g Ca/100 g exchanger. The cation exchange material is made by (1) impregnating a flat fibre sheet with solns. or dispersions of carboxyl gp. contg. polymers, (2) removing the solvent or dispersing agent and (3) opt. converting the COOH gp. into the alkali- or ammonium form. The exchangers can be made in the form of impregnated fabrics which can be used in conjunction with known washing agents in place of or as a supplement to standard builders. The exchangers have a good capacity for binding the hardness of the water, cause dispersion of dirt particles in the water, and stabilise dissolved dirt in the wash water, inactivate mineral components in the wash water, and reduce adsorption of the surface active material into the fibre. Ecological problems caused by known builders in waste water are avoided. In am example, an impregnated fabric was made by immersing a non woven polyester fabric in a dispersion of an acrylic acid/tert. butyl acrylate/divinyl benzene styrene copolymer and drying at 80 degrees C. The material was neutralised with 1 N NaOH to give a prod. with excellent binding capacity for calcium.

Abstract: CO and hydrocarbons, e.g. combustion engine exhaust gases, are oxidised at 150-800 (200-700 esp. 300-600)degrees C to CO2 + H2O, in the presence of a high strength catalyst on a support composed of a mixt. of aluminates of Cu, Mn and Ni deposited on a pure Al2O3 support, there being 10-45 (20-35) wt.% aluminates. Cu:Mn:Ni wt. ratio is opt. (2-4):(1-2):(0.1-1). There is opt. 0.5-10 (1-7) wt.% Ce, deposited on the support as its oxide. Initiation temp. is low, and the reaction is unaffected by O2 concn. in the gas mixt.
