    Abstract: Thermosetting coating compsn. comprises (A) oligomers and/or polymers contg. OH and/or epoxy gps. and (B) a mixt. of polycarboxylic acids contg. trimellitic acid. The mixt. (B) contains >=1 cpd. contg. ester groups and having formulae (I)-(III): In the formulate, R,R' and R" are opt. branched hydrocarbon gps. of valency 2-6, pref. 2, contg. 1-12, pref. 2-6C and opt. having up to 2 olefinic double bonds or contg. up to 3 ether bonds; x and y are 2-6, t is 1-5 and z and n are 0 or 1-5. The compsn. pref. contains as third component (c) a polymer of fluorinated vinyl monomers contg. is not >=2F, the ratio of A+B:C being 9:1-1:9, pref. 3:1-1:3. Used for coating a variety of substrates e.g. ceramics, wood, glass, concrete, plastics and esp. metals. The compsn. is highly reactive and can be applied as a powder or in soln. It cures at 120-200 degrees C pref. 120-180 degrees C within 30 mins. (cf. 180-200 degrees C for prior art compsns.) Compsns. contg. component (c) are partic. suitable for coil-coating. The compsn. is storage stable and (B) is soluble even in weakly polar solvent.

The mixts. are stable, have high reactivity, can be crosslinked at 20 degrees C, and can be used as powders which cause no environmental pollution in use. Powder lacquers may be hardened by stoving at 100-180 degrees C in 30 min.

    Abstract: Electrocoating bath containing a urethane of the formula R1-NHCOO-R2 where R1 is alkyl or a group of the formula B1-NH-B2-[X-B3]n-, R2 is a group of the formulae -(C2H4O)y-R1 and -(C3H7O) y-R or of the formula R is C1-C18-alkyl, Y is from zero to 4, B1 is hydrogen, alkyl or a group of the formula -COOR2, B2 and B3 can be identical or different and each is C2-C14-alkylene, n is an integer from 0 to 5, preferably from 0 to 2, X is -O-, -S-, -NH- or @N-(C1-C4)-alkyl, R3 is hydrogen or alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, phenyl or alkylphenyl, R4 and R5 can be identical or different and each is hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl, and A is a direct bond or one of the groups -O-, -CH2O- or -CH2OCO-. The presence of these urethanes in the electrocoating bath reduces the number of surface defects in galvanised surfaces.
